Celebrating Martin Luther King Jr.: Photos

A large crowd of all ages gathered in the Adorni Center for a "Celebration of Service in our Community" at the Eureka NAACP's Celebration of the Life and Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The event was co-sponsored by the City of Eureka.

Sharrone Blanck and Lorna Bryant emceed the event, with Paula Jones, Tina Okoye and Donna Landry leading off the music. Long-time local NAACP members Leslie Price, John Lee Lyons and Donna McQueen were honored with special presentations. See the slideshow below for highlights of the event.

The program included a special focus on local black-owned businesses and the relatively new Black Humboldt community group.

More music was offered by the Arcata Interfaith Gospel Choir and the Temple Beth El Choir The event closed with introductions of the HSU Black Student Union members, an announcement about the recipients of the David Josiah Lawson Memorial Scholarship and a crowd-energizing performance by the Healing and Compassion Spiritual Singers and Black Empowerment Dance Troupe. The crowd then shared a birthday cake in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. at the end of the event (he was born on Jan. 15, 1929).
