Snowy Travel Possible Friday

Posted By on Tue, Dec 22, 2020 at 11:44 AM

The National Weather Service Eureka Office is advising travelers to be ready for winter weather driving conditions as a weather system bringing snow is set to hit portions of State Routes 299 and 3 on Friday. Snow level is expected to drop to 3500 to 4000 feet, possibly as low as 2500 feet.

"A weather system will bring a potential for snow to northeastern Trinity County Friday through Saturday. Travel on highways 299 and 3 may be impacted by snow, particularly at Oregon Mountain Summit, Buckhorn Summit and Scott Mountain Pass," the NWS Eureka Facebook page reports.

"Snowfall totals up to a foot will be possible across the Trinity Alps, including Scott Mountain Summit on highway 3. Elsewhere, three to six inches of snow will be possible at Oregon Mountain and Buckhorn Summit on highway 299, while several inches of accumulation may occur across the lower valleys that include Trinity Center and Weaverville."

The NWS Eureka advises motorists to be prepared with tire chains, a full tank of gas, safety kit, gloves, hat, shovel, etc. and to monitor road conditions by calling 1-800-427-7623 or visiting www.dot.ca.gov.

Additionally, a snow report from the county of Humboldt says, "Currently there is 1 and 1/2 inches of snow at the towers on Horse Mountain. It is extremely icy, everyone carry chains."
