UPDATING: Mateel, Redwood Acres Readying for Evacuees

UPDATING:

The evacuation warning for Alderpoint, Palo Verde, Island Mountain and Harris remains in effect as the Hopkins Fire moves toward the area and residents are asked to be prepared to leave, if necessary, according to a 10 a.m. update.

Animals can be evacuated to the Humboldt County Fairgrounds (call 707-496-8841 for more information) and Redwood Acres is preparing to take in fire evacuees, both livestock and those who have an RV or are willing to camp.

The Mateel Community Center at 59 Rusk Lane is open as an evacuation shelter and small pets on leashes can stay outside of the hall. For more information, visit mateel.org.

Alderpoint Road at State Route 36 and Alderpoint Road at Upper Sawmill Road are now closed, as are Dyerville Loop Road and Fort Seward Road at Dyerville Loop Road.

The Humboldt County Office of Emergency Services issued an evacuation warning for residents in Alderpoint, Palo Verde, Island Mountain and Harris at 3:15 this morning as the Hopkins Fire in Trinity County continues to move west.

"People in these communities should prepare for potential evacuations, including personal supplies and overnight accommodations," an OES Facebook post this morning states. "Be ready to go at a moment's notice. More information will follow if an evacuation order is issued."

This morning, the Humboldt County Fairgrounds posted on Facebook that it was accepting animals that need to be evacuated and is arranging for trailers to help transport them. For more information, call 707-496-8841.

Overnight, the areas of Alderpoint, Palo Verde, Island Mountain and Harris were placed under an Evacuation Warning due to the #HopkinsFire. A mandatory evacuation order HAS NOT been issued for this area at this time. Resident are advised to remain prepared to leave.

What is an Evacuation Warning?

An Evacuation Warning means that there is potential threat to life and property and prepares people for a potential Evacuation Order.

Current Situation

Humboldt County is seeing widespread air quality impacts from neighboring wildfire activity, with many waking up this morning to red/orange skies, smoke and ash. Public safety dispatch centers across the county are experiencing an uptick in non-emergency 9-1-1 calls related to air quality and nearby fires. Residents are reminded to reserve 9-1-1 for emergencies only.

What You Can/Should Do Now:

1. Sign up for Humboldt Alert at humboldtgov.org/alerts. We can’t alert you if we can’t reach you. Sign up now for the county’s emergency alert system. This system is used to notify residents of evacuation warnings and orders, and other pertinent safety information.
