Fatal Shooting Suspect Turns Self In

A Trinidad man wanted in connection with the fatal shooting of a man who was dropped off at a CalFire station near Orick late last month was arrested today after turning himself in to authorities, according to the Humboldt County Sheriff's Office.

Shaun Patrick McMahon, 49, went to the main sheriff's office in Eureka around 9:15 a.m., a news release states. He is a suspect in the death of Benjamin Scott Thomas, 40, who was also a Trinidad resident.

Thomas was driven to the CalFire station around 6 p.m. on June 23, and left there by "multiple unknown individuals," according to the sheriff's office. Lifesaving efforts at the scene were unsuccessful and gunshot wounds were later determined to be Thomas' cause of death.

McMahon was arrested on suspicion of murder and is being held without bail, according to the HCSO release.

On July 7, 2021, at about 9:15 a.m., Shaun Patrick McMahon, age 49 of Trinidad, turned himself in to law enforcement at the Humboldt County Sheriff's Office Main Station in Eureka. McMahon has been identified as the suspect in the shooting death of Benjamin Scott Thomas. Thomas arrived injured to the Elk Camp CAL FIRE Station on Bald Hills Road near Orick on June 23, 2021. Thomas succumbed to his injuries on scene. His death was determined to be a homicide. Since this incident, the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division has been actively investigating this case and as a result of this investigation, requested a warrant for McMahon’s arrest.

McMahon was arrested and booked into the Humboldt County Correctional Facility on charges of murder (PC 187(a)). He is being held without bail. This case is still under investigation.
