An approaching winter storm is expected to pack a wallop Tuesday through Wednesday, bringing significant snowfall, heavy rains and high winds that could knock out power, down trees and close roads.

The Eureka office of the National Weather Service states the forecast currently calls for heavy snowfall of 1 to 2 feet above 1,500 feet and possibly more at higher elevations, with State Route 3, Berry Summit and Lord Ellis Summit on the State Route 299 and the Collier Tunnel on State Route 199 in the impacted zone.

Northern Trinity County could see snow down to valley floors and the Trinity County Department of Transportation is cautioning folks there that local roads could be snowed in and to be prepared not to see a plow for up to 48, even longer in remote areas or higher elevations.

Also on tap, high wind with gusts up to 50 mph and heavy rains.

“Travel could be very difficult to impossible,” the NWS states in the Winter Storm Advisory. “The hazardous conditions could impact the morning or evening commute. Gusty winds could bring down tree branches.”

Area waterways, including creeks, streams and rivers, “will see significant rises Saturday night through Sunday. Flooding is not expected on main-stem rivers, although some small streams may exceed their banks,” according to the NWS.

Significant debris flows are not expected on fire scars, a situation causing evacuations in Santa Cruz County.
