County Offices Closed Friday in Observance of Juneteenth

Most county offices will be closed Friday in observance of Juneteenth, which was established as a federal holiday this week to mark the day in 1865 when enslaved people in Texas learned they were freed after Union soliders arrived in Galvaston, bringing news the Civil War's end.

By then, more than two year had passed since the Emanicpation Proclaimation was signed by President Abraham Lincoln.

According to a county news release, the Public Health testing site will remain open.

The board of supervisors adopted a proclaimation in support of recognizing Juneteenth as a national holiday on Tuesday.
Locally, Black Humboldt and the Eureka chapter of the NAACP are holding a Juneteenth event Saturday starting at 11:30 a.m. There are options to attend via Zoom or Facebook Live, with virtual workshops, speakers, DJ sets and art performances. A celebration of the day will also take place on the Arcata Plaza from 2 to 7 p.m., where you’ll find food and more from Black-owned vendor booths.
