Wedged in the landing craft,

they gazed, awestruck,

as wave upon wave of aircraft

thundered toward France.

"There were so many

you could scarcely see the sky,"

my friend's father said,

that long-ago Day-of-days;

and, strangely,

that's what comes to mind,

standing at the Arcata Marsh

staring heavenward

as first one ragged vee

of Aleutian geese

and then another, and then another

streams overhead.
