Zip-A-Dee Zumba

Editor:

As a local "zumbaista" I was pleased to see your article ("Joyous Zumba," July 21.) on the incandescent Marla Joy. I loved the lively and apt comparison of a zumba class with a margarita. It's true -- zumba is a better high -- and good for you, what a deal!  The accompanying photo montage by Tim Gray was masterful, perfectly capturing Marla's amazing effusive exuberance.

But when I came to the reference to the young HealthSport instructors my heart sank. Though the criticism was gentle, I felt it an opportunity missed to publicly praise these fine young women. I've been happily indulging in a daily zumba class at HealthSport for more than two years, and find the quality of instruction amazing. Rosie, Mimi, Julia, and Jessie are not just young, energetic and very talented. They are focused, creative, kind and encouraging, and they share these attributes so generously! Their professional attitude is welcoming, their choreography entertaining, fresh -- and such a great source of fun and amusement to this aging boomer. So, thank you Marla Joy, and thank you awesome and beautiful young zumba instructors of HealthSport! You do wonderful work; you enrich your community.

Finally,  to the Journal and its fine staff of writers -- Ryan Burns, Andrew Goff, Heidi Walters, Charlie Myers, Mark Shikuma, Amy Stewart, Bob Doran, Stephanie Silvia and others: thank you, I truly enjoy reading your weekly take on all things Humboldt.

*Sweet Spot: This week's Bon Boniere sundae goes to Ginny Kelly, for trying to keep all things Zumba just as sweet as can be.*
