Northwestern Pacific Railroad Historical Society member and author Angelo Figone presents “The Northwestern Pacific Railroad: Lifeline of the Redwood Empire, Boom and Bust 1951-2001” at the Humboldt County Historical Society program meeting on Saturday, October 7 at 1:00 p.m. in the first-floor conference room of the Humboldt County Library, 1313 Third Street, Eureka. Admission is free and everyone is invited. The NWPRR has been an integral part of Humboldt County history since 1907, and remnants of the once mighty railroad remain as reminders of the system that once connected Humboldt to the world. From the beginning boom years of Northern California’s lumber traffic in the 1950s to the demise of the Redwood Empire’s lifeline, Angelo Figone’s new book tells the story of the last fifty years of the Northwestern Pacific Railroad—from boom to bust. During this program, Figone will show photographs, maps, and charts from his extravagantly illustrated full-color book, share stories of NWPRR workers who “were there,” and look at the challenges and rewards of this unique subsidiary to the Southern Pacific Railroad.
