At long last, the
Blogthing
has made the jump from Wordpress to the mothership! Huzzah! Update your bookmarks!
The move lets us do all kinds of things we’ve been a-achin’ to do. And with that, allow me to introduce the newest member of the staff: NCJ Robot, the cybernetic blogger (right)! The robot — who, incidentally, wishes some clever reader would come along and give him a more interesting name — has a plateful of tasks, as you can see below. He watches a list of local blogs and informs us when they are updated. He peeks in on Sacramento to see what Sen. Pat Wiggins and Assm. Wes Chesbro have been up to. Every morning, while we all sleep, he condenses and clarifies the
Times-Standard
homepage to allow for pain-free browsing. And already he’s asking for more!
The idea, if I can come down to Earth for a moment, is to automate and publish the old-school newspaper tip sheet. The Internet is full of story ideas; we can set the robot to bring them on home to us (and to you) on a every-five-minutely basis. We can scour them over together. Much more of this is coming soon. And, of course, there’ll still be regular posts by the human members of the staff — more regular than ever, we hope.
The launch of the new
Blogthing
has been hurried along, and, actually, is somewhat premature. It probably looks like hell in most versions of Internet Explorer. The design is skeletal. The calendar navigation box, halfway down the right-hand bar, is a big joke. To Hell with it, though — we’ll fix it as we go along. In the meantime, please file your bug reports and feature requests below.
This article appears in Mending Broken Hearts.

walk me thru how this thing works spying on our elected represntatives in order to know exactly WHAT they are up to…Can I send Smash_atticus to Chesbro to post my comments on his proposed bill? Is this a 3rd party app that can tie into the OpenDemocracy Polling Alex Stillman has running?
sorry too much coffee, did that question make sense…
As regards Wiggins and Chesbro, the bot checks every morning to see if either of them have introduced new legislation. If they have, it posts a friendly little Facebook-style update.
Looks like an entertaining Robot.
Can you throw a magic switch and make her a sexy robot, like in Metropolis?
And then she could free all the people living under the Humboldt bay…
When I put your url in my sidebar blogroll – this address http://www.northcoastjournal.com/blogthing/
shows up as journal.comments, and the feed is giving me comments and not your post – AND, when you click on the blogthing link it is going straight to the Journal mainpage… in short it is not feeding as a blog.
When you announced the end of the Blogthing, I did one of those Moe Sizlak "whaaaaa?" takes.
Hmmmmm … new, improved Blogthing!!
Cheers all.
Rose, here’s the feeds we have right now.
Blogthing:
http://www.northcoastjournal.com/feeds/blogthing/
It has to be beefed up a bit, but it’s there.
Blogwatch (aka, the Pipes):
http://www.northcoastjournal.com/feeds/blogwatch/
North Coast Journal comments:
http://www.northcoastjournal.com/feeds/comments/
All comments from northcoastjournal.com, including the blog, the main site and the occasional bit of spam that makes it past TypePad.
I do take requests.
Humbotia (she may look masculine but I’m anything this organized must be feminine) is awesome. Long may she reign/rain!!!
And anything as messy as my comment must have been done by somebody who should take a break from the computer.
Let’s restate:
Humbotia (you may look masculine but I’m BETTING anything this organized must be feminine), you are awesome. Long may you reign!!! And may you keep bringing rain.
There, now I feel better.
I liked the first one more!
You like it ’cause I sound like I’ve been smoking the local product not just talking about it–it feeds you normal male superiority complex;>
Congrats! Can’t wait to see your digital diggers in action.
Kym: Isn’t there a blog named Humboldtia?
How about HUMBO? HUMBO, the NCJ Robot.
Oh, fine, catch me in plagiarism and then plagiarize from Disney’s elephant movie–a Humboldt blogger or an LA carny King–now who would you rather borrow from?
Thanks, Hank! I knew you’d have it.
Do I have to sign in EVERY time?
Ach, no, sorry. That’s one of the things I didn’t quite finish.
If you’re logged in at the main page, then you don’t have to enter your name and e-mail and such when you’re commenting here.
This is super! Congrats!
What took so long? I thought Django was simple pie.
Well, we started in earnest with this just a couple of months ago, in between putting out the paper.
The backend was the least of it. It’s a ganked and modified version of the blog at Django Basic Apps, updated to account for the different post sources.
The layout was a tricky part for me. Eventually I ended up tweaking Blueprint CSS to fit our requirements. We had very specific column widths in mind to accommodate various ad sizes, and the standard Blueprint layout wouldn’t cut it. This was all terra incognita for me — still is, in a lot of ways.
A good deal of the development time was spent on engineering an admin site as Wordpress-like as possible. TinyMCE gets us half the way there, though you have to deal with its quirks. The rest of the problem was file handling, which is still far from braindead-easy but is at least manageable.
jQuery and jQuery UI made the Javascript simple.
The robot was the easiest part of all — endless gratification. Fun fact: The NCJ Robot is the world’s biggest fan of KHUM, and spends his off-duty cycles maintaining a scarily obsessive Twitter feed devoted to the station.
Humboldtia.
“in between putting out the paper.” Excuses, excuses…
jQuery is and JQuery UI are super. Luv the robot. Thanks for including tt in your feed.
A name? How ’bout Humbot?
What a great addition. Congrats
