Humboldt County’s most infamous slumlords have been ordered to pay the City of Eureka more than $26,000 in attorneys’ fees. Floyd and Betty Squires unsuccessfully sued the City last year, arguing that they had been unfairly singled out for renting substandard hovels.
If you’re unfamiliar with the Squireses track record, some highlights lowlights can be found here, here and here.
Here’s the press release from the City of Eureka:
The Humboldt County Superior Court has granted the City of Eureka’s motion for Attorneys’ Fees against Floyd and Betty Squires. The City was awarded the entire amount requested of $26,521.26. The City requested reimbursement of the fees it had incurred when it was forced to defend a lawsuit filed by the Squires against the City claiming that the City had no basis to enforce code violations for substandard housing at numerous properties owned by the Squires.
The City continues to move forward in its lawsuit against the Squires for substandard housing at numerous properties within the City of Eureka.

Such nice people. I’m sure that they’ll leave everything to their dog.
26K is a drop in the bucket compared to what these ones have cost (and continue to cost) us.
I’m glad the city stepped up (finally) to address these blatant code violations. I’d like to see them do the same with the former Downtowner. Irresponsible landowners who create neighborhood blight should be held accountable.

They can pay lawyers and court costs, but they can’t pay to keep their property up to code. sigh.
What’s wrong with these 2 people? It’s like they enjoy being cruel to their tenants, or enjoy the controlling power trip. They’re fighting the city, and ignoring the public, because they don’t want to let anyone tell them what to do. Plus, their properties, and properties of other landlords like them, make Eureka look like an arm pit to people driving through.
THAT lawsuit was one of the absolute BEST uses of taxpayer money that I can think of.
KUDOS to the city, the attorney’s representing the city, and the courts.
It has taken more than 20 years for the County and the State to prosecute these two? Wheels of justice turn very slowly I guess.
They give people who have made mistakes a chance when everyone else on Humboldt looks down on them like scum, but does that mean we must love like scum? No one will rent to me so I must endure rain in my home, mold, bugs, faulty wiring, and countless other substandard livings because no one else will rent to some one with evictions, bad credit, and multiple children. So it is a lover hate relation ship for me and my family
I rented from them in the 70s.They were crooked then. They had a place on pine st,in eureka. It was nice but second month after moving we had plumbing issues and they illegally increased the rent.We moved.Im surprised to hear there name after all this time.I fiquired theyd be dead from the scumyness of there own poisonous personalities and the cloud of hate lumeing over them. It had been a very nice building. That is before they owned it.
In fact now I think back to then….The second month after we moved in,they illegally raised the rent when we complained of plumbing issues, and we had to dispute it and win in court. That was in 1980. Now Im gone from lovely Eureka, but I keep tabs. But its like everywhere else.A corrupt few run the town into the ground while everyone else suffers and are amazed at how politicians get away with them padding there pockets so to stop the justice from protecting the victums. I really thought such scum as the two Squires, would be long dead by now.Really! I thought someone woulda shot at least one of them by now or the rotteness of there souls would cause Gods wrath to desend apone them and take them to there hellish grave. This act has been going on since the 70s and there still screwing people in Eureka over and over?
