Happy Valentine’s Day, Humboldt… except you Eurekans. You’ve been deemed un-romantic by the folks at Redbox — you know, the company that plants those faceless DVD spewing kiosks in high-traffic shopping locations. Yeah, those love experts.
Eureka ranked fifth on Redbox’s list of “10 Least Romantic Cities” based on the number of romantic comedies we rent behind three cities in Texas and one in Mississippi.
People of Eureka: If this outrages you and you want to improve our standing in future rankings, uh, consider rushing out to pick up a copy of the new release What’s Your Number? now in a Redbox near you!
Huh? There is no Redbox in Eureka?
Whatever. Great list, Redbox!

This article appears in School Bus Breakdown.

If there are no customers in Eureka, then there’s no harm in offending Eurekans.
I’m gonna tend to agree with Ta Da! on this one.
It’s better that way. Redbox has contributed to the demise of movie rental stores. Blockbuster stores all over the country have closed and the mom & pop video stores have shut down as well when there is a Redbox on every corner.
Cheaper rental, limited variety and open 24-7.
When we came back to Humboldt, I was very happy to see no Redbox $1 rentals. 🙂
Machines were pretty much all that was left in the city. I like the ability to walk into a video rental place and look at the movies.
Redbox…pfft
The info is based on originating zip codes in an area. We travel to Arcata CVS to rent our movies at that Red Box. By the way, What’s Your Number is pretty funny
We’re in good company: we’ve got Vegas with us, and we know people fall in love there all the time!
Actually there was a Redbox at the old Safeway at Harris and Harrison. I rented a DVD there once and it was in such poor shape that I couldn’t watch or even play it on my machine.
I am pretty sure it was a romantic comedy though.
Safeway has blockbuster not redbox
romantic in Eureka is to take your honey over to The Wine Spot, listen to Blue Lotus Jazz, and sip and murmur on Valentine’s Day…
Maybe it’s because we still have some decent video rental places here. At least in Arcata. Maybe romantics don’t think it’s romantic to get a movie out of a box?
@Godlin. La Dolce Videos: Think outside the (Red)box!
Watch the sunset over the bay… walk hand in hand through Redwood (or Sequoia) park… take a ride on the Madaket… cuddle by the fireplace while the rain falls outside your windows… Too many ways to be romantic in this town to limit it to just one day. Happy Valentine’s all.
If Blockbuster’s business model in McKinleyville was replicated nationwide, it’s easy to understand the demise of its video stores. In the same shopping mall, Blockbuster was operating a 24/7 vending machine in Safeway.
You know, I’m not sad about those mom & pop video stores. We have the Internet now, with live streaming video. Those moms & pops need to find a better business model. Preferably one that will endure in these changing times.
If you’re not a bricklayer, a carpenter, a plumber or a prostitute, Plato, your “business model” will dry up at some point too. If others are as kindly as you seem to be, don’t expect a lot of sympathy.
Look at the locations:
The top 10 are in the ‘Arctic Circle’
The bottom 10 actually can leave the house in the winter.
Might have something to do with it…
Truly romantic people don’t watch DVDs on Valentine’s Day–they’re sparkin their sweethearts in the flesh!
The question is why no Redboxes in Eureka? I called the company once to inquire and they said that the city won’t allow em. Curious, since there are or were Blockbuster vending machines in town.
