Arcata police are investigating a fatal stabbing that occurred at about 1:20 this morning.

Arcata Police Chief Brian Ahearn said the incident began outside the Arcata Theater Lounge on G Street when a man confronted another man he’d had a “beef” with and stabbed him. The fight moved into the 600 block of 10th Street and, at some point, a third man became involved.

The fight ended with the man who appeared to have instigated it dropping a knife and collapsing on G Street, Ahearn said, adding the man later died of his wounds.

The two other men were transported to local hospitals with stab or cutting wounds, Ahearn said, adding that two knives were recovered from the crime scene, which spanned multiple blocks. He stressed that APD believes there is no ongoing threat to the community from the incident.

Ahearn asked that anyone with information about the case call 822-2424.

FELONY ASSAULT IN ARCATA

Felony Assault in Arcata

On 4/18/21 at about 0121 hours, officers with the Arcata Police Department responded to the 1000 block of G Street for the report of a male that had been stabbed. Upon arrival, officers located three subjects with injuries consistent with being inflicted by a knife or stabbing/slicing weapon.

During the subsequent investigation, the Arcata Police Department was able to identify the involved subjects and determine that the three involved subjects knew each other prior to this assault. This fight between the three subjects left two of them hospitalized and one deceased.

This appears to be an isolated event and there is no information that there is any threat to the public at this time. Further information will be released as the investigation progresses.

The Arcata Police Department is requesting anyone with information on this investigation please contact Detective Sergeant Ortega at 707-822-2424.

  1. I gotta say that when we drive through Arcata and see homeless men with Bowie knife size blades on their belts we have commented that someone is going to bleed out on the streets soon. On the other hand if I were sleeping in the bushes, probably among a bunch of other addicts, I would want a weapon.

  2. I know the young man that was killed and he would not have started a fight- I’ve known him since he was a kid- I hope the investigation clears him of any wrong doing

  3. We, Luis Pinel and Arlette Zelaya-Pinel, Louie’s parents beg all who know more about what happened the night he was killed, its details and root causes of this fight, to inform the authorities so, His death doesn’t go to waste but serve the purpose he was trying to defend.

We don’t support the violent way this fight took place in any fashion but we support what he was fighting against.

We beg anyone who really saw and/or heard what happened or even better took a video of it including, when Louie was stabbed and NOT only of what he did, to please, share that info with the authorities. Currently, there’s only one of what he did but NOT of what was done to him.

Our son had a great heart incapable of hurting someone unless it was in self defense, he was known in his new town, Humboldt as someone who helped so many people. He not only helped people in need but made them feel like family. The same way he was helped and made felt when he first arrived to Humboldt from Avon, CT.
