Take note: Our superstar Dirt columnist, Amy Stewart, has officially banned the word “locavore” and just about everything that fits under its umbrella. Her intervention comes at the precise moment locavorophilia makes its blushing debut.

You can listen to Stewart’s take-no-prisoners commentary on All Things Considered on the NPR web site.  And you can read her account of the loco-vores’ outraged pushback at Garden Rant.

  1. I hear you loud and clear, Amy. I stumbled upon this list not too long ago, put out by Lake Superior State University. Banished words for 2008:

My personal least favorite word: unprecedented. It has been overused since 9/11 and it makes me cringe every time I hear it. (“…an unprecedented attack on American soil…” sound familiar? Augh!)

  2. We raise our trowel AND fork to you, Amy, for swinging the pendulum back toward center. We admire the accomplishments of those with teeny carbon footprints, but we find the chest-pounding and self-aggrandizment oh-so wearisome.
