A local Families Belong Together rally will join hundreds of others taking place across the country Saturday to protest the separation of families at the U.S.-Mexico border as part of a “zero tolerance” approach by the Trump administration that has left thousand of children in detention centers away from their parents.

The march is scheduled to begin at Madaket Plaza, the foot of C Street, at 10 a.m. with a Native blessing and presentations before moving along the Boardwalk and through Old Town Eureka, including a stop at the local Department of Homeland Security office, according to a release from organizers.

“To separate immigrant families, victims of violence, hunger and poverty, is to re-violate them. Children as young as 18 months are torn from their mother’s arms by the U.S. government,” the release states. “This is violent abuse. These families are victimized again by the government to which they turn for help. Families Belong Together opposes the inhumane policies of the Trump Administration, Border Patrol, and I.C.E. and calls for immediate reform.”

Families Belong Together! Public outrage is growing over the shocking and inhumane treatment of families seeking refuge at our southern border and in our communities. Joining over 3,500 concerned political and community leaders and 60 cities across the country, local residents are organizing the Families Belong Together Rally in Eureka, Saturday, June 30th.

Activities will begin at Madaket Plaza, foot of C Street at 10 a.m. A Native blessing will open the events, followed by a short program including representatives from the National Union of Healthcare Workers, Centro del Pueblo, and other community members and organizations.

Calls to action will include ways for local residents to help change these failed and illegal immigration policies. Organizers will provide letters and suggested language for contacting our Congressional representatives. We will then march along the Boardwalk and through Old Town, including the office the Department of Homeland Security. Signs are welcome – please raise your voices for compassion and fairness. This a family friendly event.

“Centro del Pueblo is proud to join with many other Humboldt groups and individuals to stand against the separation of children from their parents at the border,” states Brenda, an immigrant from Mexico living in Humboldt County and member of Centro del Pueblo. “We call on everyone in our County to stand for humanity and compassion, not racism.”

Families Belong Together is a nationwide initiative that opposes the cruel, inhumane and unjustified separation of children from their parents along the U.S. border with Mexico and at other ports of entry into the U.S. Families Belong Together protests the conditions in which these children are kept – and the irreversible trauma that has already been perpetrated on these children and their parents for the crime of seeking a better life.

  1. How funny. Still confused about the difference between “immigrant” and “Illegal Alien”? They aren’t immigrants, nor children or kids…that is
the media families are split up every single day in this country, have been for decades when anyone is incarcerated. But now its OUTRAGE because its illegal aliens?

Personally speaking, this election I vote this for candidates who prioritize citizens over illegal aliens, those who oppose sanctuary cities, amnesty and taxpayer funded in state college tuition discounts for illegals. That means no Democrats and no RINO’s.

When will politicians and people in general figure out that when you reward illegal immigration with jobs, amnesty, drivers licenses, discounts for college tuition, scholarships encourages MORE illegal entry.. Illegal immigration negativity effects our economy from employment to use public services. Just debating this in congress is
costing taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars….. thank the parents. Another concern is the real “immigrants” who have waited in
line? The “dreamers” don’t care about them, but we as a country should.

People fleeing persecution? or people fleeing for freebies? they don’t stay in Mexico when they reach safety or ask for political asylum in Mexico. Why? because Mexico will give them nothing. So they make the long journey to our border. America is not splitting up families, that
    decision is theirs.

Just some of the costs associated with illegal immigration, we will pass this burden on to our children and grand children as has been passed on to us

The cost of educating illegal aliens children is staggering. From K-12 it costs taxpayers $122,000 for EACH illegal alien student. This does not include the billions spent on bilingual education for illegal aliens.

*Currently city, and state officials are appropriating millions of taxpayer dollarsfor legal fees to to file law suits and in defense of illegal aliens being deported and to sue our own Government..

*2012 illegal aliens sent home $62 BILLION in remittances back to their countries of origin. This is why Mexico is getting involved in our politics.

*30% percent of all Federal Prison inmates are illegal aliens.Does not include local jails and State Prisons. At $21,000 per year expense per inmate in Federal Prison U do the math.

*$3Million Dollars a DAY is spent to incarcerate illegal aliens, I repeat 3 MILLION a DAY to process Illegals in the Criminal justice system.

*$2.2Billion dollars a year is spent on is spent on food assistance programs such as SNAP (food stamps) WIC, & free school lunches.

  2. Matt 8:36. Tell me one thing: this whole administration (I used to believe it was “just Trump”) has done what Jesus would approve. Beatitudes? I’m writing to you.

You make all these negative claims. Do you make these statics up? Where did you get this information? After you credit (?) Fox News, you could probably use “FN.”

I lived here 25 years ago. Back then, the prejudice was more open. You could say it out loud and if you said it loud enough in a bar, you would expect (and get) 75% or more of vocal support.

    I’ll pray for you

  3. How convenient.

The U.S. illegally bombs 30 nations since WWII so that the “deserving” can gorge ourselves on the world’s “cheap” oil, natural resources and child labor…and then piss and moan about the human fallout!?

Blaming the victim has always been a psychological necessity of the fort-builders, bomb-throwers, and pillagers.

    “For the children”…
