A bicyclist was killed after being struck by a semi-truck at West Harris and Union streets in Eureka yesterday morning, the Eureka Police Department announced today.
According to a press release, emergency personnel were summoned to the scene shortly before 8:30 a.m. and declared the cyclist deceased shortly after arriving.
The collision is being investigated by EPD’s Criminal Investigations Unit and Major/Fatal Injury Team, with assistance from the California Highway Patrol. The investigation uncovered surveillance footage of the collision.
According to the press release, the semi-truck was traveling north on Union Street and had stopped at a red light at W. Harris when a 73-year-old bicyclist approached, traveling west on the southern sidewalk of W. Harris. As the semi-truck began making a righthand turn, the cyclist continued west on W. Harris, according to the release, and the two collided.
Impairment does not appear to be a factor in the crash, according to the release, which remains under investigation. EPD asks anyone who may have witnessed the collision to call investigators at (707) 441-4300.
