Lehman out, Wilson out.

Mike Wilson: “I believe that there’s a lot of work to do, and I don’t need to be supervisor to get a lot of things done that we need to get done in Humboldt County. I believe we have a great candidate in Mark Lovelace, who’s been a great community organizer and model citizen, and I fully support Mark Lovelace in his run for supervisor.” Chris Lehman: “I think we just decided that it was better to pay attention to my family — to pay attention to my 17-month-old daughter.” No endorsement. “After considering it so closely, I feel like the community’s got a lot at stake here and we need to make a good decision. This job is serious as a heart attack.”

For the Third District: Paul Pitino, Bryan Plumley and Mark Lovelace.

Apparently it was quite a scene down at the Elections Office this afternoon, as candidates tried to figure out who was in and who was out at any moment, calculating and recalculating their chances.

  1. Wow. This is pretty interesting stuff. Lehman out. Wilson out. Lovelace and Pitino I know. Plumley I don’t know. I don’t live in District 3, so I don’t have to make a decision between Mark and Paul. I respect them both.

I was ready to make some entries in support of Chris Lehman because I have worked with Chris and I found him to be extremely impressive. I know he would have had a tough battle because he doesn’t have the name recognition right now. But I hope Chris runs for elected office in the future. Humboldt County would benefit from Chris holding an elective office.

  2. Looks fascinating! This race has a good shot at being over in June with just two viable candidates.

I think Plumley has a better shot vs. Lovelace than he would vs. Wilson or Lehman and no November runoff w/ a Presidential election to draw voters.

    popcorn and beer please…

  3. P.S.

Nice job, Hank, reporting on these developments as they happened. This is the new media. You bested the two dailies.

  4. Chris would have been a good supervisor. I was sorry to see him bow out of the race. I think he could have made it into a runoff.

  5. Whoever, the winner will be the most liberal member of the Board of Supervisors.

I think that’s debatable. Jimmy Smith is liberal, but in his own independent and moderate kind of way. Bonnie is hard to categorize, but she seems to have developed some relatively liberal views on certain issues. Jill seems to be going the opposite direction of Bonnie in her political journey, but I think she holds some liberal values, even if it doesn’t always show.

We’ll have to see where Plumley comes down on the issues — especially on development issues. The immediate and enthusiastic Ulansey endorsement doesn’t help with his liberal cred. If his views are at all similar to Ulansey’s, he could end up being to the right of one or more of the current supervisors.

  6. Its really good News, Lovelace will give the HELP coalition a drubbing and send those reactionary land despoiling speculators back to their hidey holes.

Now, lets get rid of the Rodoni Palco subordinate and humiliate Smith into realizing the fish ain’t coming back so build a museum to ’em on the balloon track.
Then we’ll have the officials in place to begin building a constant and steady growth economy rather than boom and bust get rich quick commodity extraction.

  7. I personally know Plumbly, having served on a board with him. My opinion of him is he’s not as billed indecisive, uninformed, and not too bright.

He’s played salesman, shilling for mutual fund managers. Now that the market is tanking, he’s looking for a new pony to ride.

Mike Harvey favors him as the stealth Republican.

  8. If Mike Harvey is enthusiastic about Plumley’s candidacy, then I’m skeptical. Sorry Mike, you know we just don’t see eye-to-eye politically.

But I don’t live in the 3rd District so I will let those of you who do sort it out.

  9. Andy,

Did I say I was “enthusiastic” about Plumley or did I say I was “fascinated” by this race?

Be very skeptical about the person I endorsed in the 1st district in Jimmy Smith. Also be skeptical about Connie Stewart as she called me earlier this week asking advice on a political matter.

Remember, I am not involved with the CAGOP now, so I do have the freedom to support whomever I want without regard to political registration. Furthermore, with the CA GOP’s financial situation, I am happy to be out of that loop.

I just finished coaching 8th grade boys basketball with the tourney in CC this past weekend and look forward to coaching Little League which starts next week.

    This is what really matters.

  10. Mike dissembles only when his mouth is moving. Plumley is a stalking horse for the successors to free Government given homestead grantees who now claim absolute God given “property rights”

  11. Yeah I know, Mike. I did an entry about the CAGOP’s financial situation and another on their misfortune to keep hiring heavyweights with immigration problems. Good luck with Little League.

  12. Andy,

Thanks. We have a great group of young kids. Even Hank has been to one of our games last year in sunny Blue Lake.

Who is your brother supporting in the 4th Congression race (Doolittle’s seat) now that Oller dropped out? McClintock? I cannot see him supporting Doug Ose after the Dan Lungren/Mary Ose/Rico Oller race a few years ago.

Bill did use to work for Rico before he went over to Sam A’s office…?

  13. No. You are correct, Mike. My brother, who indeed work for Oller before going to work for Aanestad, is supporting McClintock. He was the spokesman for Oller’s short-lived campaign for the 4th Congressional District.

I had intended to blog on this development, McClintock — a Southern Californian carpetbagging in the Sierra Nevada — but it’s not a local race or issue. I look at is a sign that the far right is losing its grip on the CAGOP and is desperately trying to avoid losing any more seats traditionally held by ultraconservatives.

  14. OK Hank, I’ll take that as an anxious compliment. I’m only trying to repay for the complimentary Bon Boniere sundae I got last year.

  15. No, I wouldn’t take it as ANY kind of a compliment…I’d take it as an accurate portrayal of an asshole who doesn’t stray beyond party lines nor look past them…

More pointedly, NON, since you seem to revel in your non native status and belittle those of us who are actually from here, you represent the worst of the nonnatives who have fought every issue as if it was Normandy landing and made demonized those you disagree with…
