Editor:

My name is Jamara Knight, and I am a 30-year resident of Humboldt County. This community is run by a select number of families and their friends. It has been that way for decades. Shannon is part of that group.

The article recently published by Jennifer Fumiko Cahill (“Miranda’s Rescue Under Scrutiny,” June 18, 2026) is skewed. Reputable journalists verify facts before publishing them. Charmaine and Zora were vetted animals and the facilities that transferred them have been transparent about their adoptability. The fact that the North Coast Journal published his lies about dogs being killed and pretend “adopters” is sickening and is the very behaviors that have allowed this to continue for decades. I have seen many, many accusations over the years and I have watched Shannon utilize his pull in the community to gaslight and discredit them. The very thing your article intended. It is reminiscent of how sexual abuse survivors are treated. Discredit the witness and the truth becomes secondary. There is no perfect witness. Shannon’s picture on the front page and not the picture of those dead dogs is almost uncomprehensible. If that many animals are being killed by animals on his property what does that say about his rescue practices? Were the volunteers working with the animals to ensure their chances at adoption, or were they put in pens with scarce food and water? The conditions of the dogs coming out of the rescue have been reported as underweight with visible scarring. Another verifiable fact left out. Where are the workers that can confirm Shannon’s tales?

Another example of poor journalism and skewed reporting. That article was nothing more than his defense. This was egregious journalism and perpetuates Miranda’s gaslighting of this community. The transparency is lacking, and Shannon is banking on this community not forcing an investigation.
