College of the Redwoods was notified Friday that it has been placed on “show cause” accreditation status by the Accrediting Commission for Junior and Community Colleges (ACCJC), due to deficiencies that date back to 1999. The “show cause” sanction is the final step before losing accreditation.
In a letter to Interim Superintendent/President Uptal Goswami, the ACCJC outlined nine recommendations for coming back into compliance with standards. Judging from the recommendations, the deficiencies at CR are serious and wide-ranging — from the measurement of student outcomes to distribution of course syllabi, insufficient employee evaluations and sub-par communication from the Board of Trustees.
The college will be required to submit a report documenting measures taken to address the deficiencies by October 15 of this year. If the college fails to demonstrate “consistent and reliable compliance” with ACCJC standards, it will lose its accreditation in January, 2013.

The Commission determined that CR has not addressed deficiencies in its institutional planning and student learning outcomes documentation, which are issues the college has been on notice to remedy since 1999.
While on show cause, CR remains fully accredited. The ACCJC will bring an accreditation team visit team to CR in October 2012 to consider evidence that the college has met accreditation standards in the areas identified by the commission’s most recent report.
Show cause is the most serious of the sanctions the ACCJC can impose on a college. It occurs when the ACCJC determines that an institution is in substantial non-compliance with its eligibility requirements. CR must demonstrate by Oct. 15, 2012 that it has corrected the deficiencies noted by the commission.
CR will post the report and letter from the ACCJC regarding its accreditation status on the college’s website, www.redwoods.edu.

One thing has been relatively consistent throughout the entire time period that CR has been getting warnings from the ACCJC — the Board of Trustees. Isn’t it time that they were held accountable since they have been the ones approving the actions of all the previous administrations?
Dear Guest, yes you are so right and it goes even farther back than ’99, the trustees have always listened only to the president and not to anyone else- not staff, not faculty, and I’ve not seen any evidence they even work with the community much, or are aware of state or national trends that would affect the college, such as the change in accreditation standards that happened in 2004-05, to outcomes-based measures. To be fair, some trustees are new and in their first term. But we have some that have been here 15+ years, too. And they evaluate themselves in closed session with a little survey/checklist that no one else even sees! They evaluate the president in closed session with another little survey/checklist that no one else even sees! No wonder they were so surprised by the Noel-Levitz employee survey. No wonder that presidents from Sampson to Crabill to Harris to Marsee were able to tell them anything and have them all believe it! I agree they should be held accountable, and I think this accreditation report does that, however, I’d like that accountability to be proven to us by seeing them work their butts off helping us get our full accreditation back. My question for the trustees is: what can you do for the college to help mend the damage you have been responsible for? And if they can’t think of anything, they should resign and make way for someone who can. I think that’s only fair.
Those board members need to gracefully step down. They have let our community down. Time to clean house.
Oh,I just contacted them(ACCJC),to remind them of the previous complaints and crimes committed by the board pres. and dean.Back in late 70s and 80s they were in a scam to buy sell/property to the college and they borrowed the financial aid money to do it.There dummy corp was called the Sasquach corperation.I was the spy for there journalist department that as a security guard,I dug up some of there dirty secrets copied them,snuck people with bugs in there office,and gave the evidance to the press back then. How come such corruption still prevails? Well then,when they got caught back then,they were forced to buy back the mandocino property,but the scam was even on then,so they made money on there reverse transaction too. Even though it was a punishment.????WTF? who was the JUDGE then? He was in there pocket for certain$$$$$$$$Crime does pay for the people like Hanna and Six. I would love to go to there trial as a witness against them as I had bugged the office and eased dropped along with Mission impossible style news gathering.Much went nowhere because it was illegal but so was watergate. We did nail them then but as I indicated,they had the fix on in the court with a payoff so there getting caught,actualy proffited them. Look it up if you dont remember.Yes they ran it like G.O. ran the lighthouse ranch. Lacking moral guidance,and running a place that is a community as if the general population there had no rights.As if its ok to dismiss or cruiley harm others to prove they have the power.And of course rob them too. They at the college have stolen from the tax payer repeatedly through taking student loan money,etc.Cooking the books and all the tricks they can to take as much as possible.Makes you wonder what else there skeaming this greed and luker for.Guess youll all have to let me know when you all find that one out.Sorry my dear friends of humbolt.I hope things get better some day soon.M.L.Z.
