The Humboldt Sentinel reports on a stunning ideological coup attempt at Monday’s special meeting of the Humboldt County Supervisors, wherein the conservative majority moved to invalidate the nearly complete General Plan Update and potentially start from scratch.
According to the report, Fifth District Supervisor Ryan Sundberg complained that the document, which has moved through a lengthy public input and planning commission process, is “just too big and unwieldy to digest.” Brand-new First District Supervisor Rex Bohn agreed, saying he didn’t have enough time to familiarize himself with the update, according the to report.
After the meeting, Third District Supervisor Mark Lovelace sounded an exasperated note on his Facebook page:
At our meeting today, Supervisors Sundberg and Bohn asked staff to bring back some “alternatives” to the General Plan Update we have before us, such as just ‘tweaking’ the old 1984 plan. The draft before us was guided by 11 Supervisors and 14 different Planning Commissioners, with input from over a thousand community members at over 200 meetings over 12 years. There is no magic shortcut.
The matter will be considered at what’s sure to be a heated meeting next Monday, Sept. 17.

Echoing Nelson from The Simpsons – Ha Ha!
Heaven forbid someone has a different opinion here in Humboldt!
Thanks Rob Arkley!
Oh I love the sound of Ryan Burns giving birth to a litter of puppies. It’s worth it all just for that.
Holyshit. I thought you guys hated Charles. Suck ups! 😀
Thomas Bradshaw is dreamy.
Hold on citizens, the sky isn’t falling. We just want a GPU that we can all understand and feel comfortable with. We’re not there yet. And it isn’t for lack of trying. Is it too much to ask for some reconciliation and a chance to move forward together or is this “I win; you lose.” approach just too much fun?
I win, you lose!
Rex Bohn doesn’t have the time. Nice!
Ryan, your lede is silly. A coup is a secret, extra-legal attempt to seize power. And that did happened in years past, when the now-shriveled greens exercised their Rovian playbook of dividing, demonizing and flat-out lying about, for example, why they passed the emergency TPZ ordinance (to send a message to the Palco judge), only to try to extend their ’emergency’ after the Palco judge declared that he got their message loud and clear.
Systematic doubletalk, covering up the architects of the code enforcement scandal, inability to deal honestly with citizens blown off by predetermined outcomes–all that happened for years, and it’s why Mark is so lonely today on the Board. It’s also why the GPU adds up to so much tergiversating gibberish.
So what happened yesterday was not at all surprising, or upsetting. It’s transparent politics. It’s a shame neither you nor what’s left of the Arcata junta even recognize how politics is supposed to work. What does that say?
Had to look that one up. But when I went to look it up, the online dictionary just said “see Humboldt County General Plan Update Process, 2000-2012.”
Sundberg…
You elected that drunk. Yes, you did NCJ! Remember witholding Sundberg’s arrest information from your readers? The night before the election when old Sunny boy got a Dewey?
Thanks Hank…
As for Rex, don’t even get me started Eureka…
So an insurance salesman, a pot grower and an environmentalist walk into a bar. Throw in the bartender and the waiter…hey, it’s the Humboldt Co. Board of Supervisors!
LOL at Jeff Muscrat…
Please, oh please get started on Rex. He has a mandate, and it’s one that you don’t agree with.
Tough shit.
On Ryan Sunberg’s DUI – get over it. It’s been discussed to death, and despite you and Mitch’s protestations, he hasn’t been taken out and shot.
HumCo got what it voted for – a moderate to conservative BOS.
THANK JAH!
And Thank JAH Richardsons Grove realignment work will be starting soon
The heavy lifting been done by the Planning Commissioners. All the Board members have to do is concur with the Planning Commission or pick another option.
There are 4. A, B, C, and D.
A is the most environmentally protective option.
B has more flexibility
C is everything a developer ever wanted
D is the status quo – ie same as the old plan – no change
The board is reviewing a chapter at a time. Either agree with PC or make a change. Don’t blame the staff because you don’t have the brain power or analytical skills to do your job which is choose. Staff and Planning are doing all the policy stuff. We understand you couldn’t actually do the work, but you can’t even choose?
Had they not attending Planning Meetings and studied this in advance?
$80,000.00 a year to folks who finds this stuff “super overwhelming”? Too confusing?
Talk about unqualified for the job? If they were employees, any boss would have fired them after that meeting.
Who vetted these folks? Why were they NOT quizzed on this issue by the media during their campaigns?
V. Bass has been in office almost 13 years, 10 at City Hall where they have updated the General Plan a few times as well as their local coastal plan. She’s overwhelmed too, but wasn’t going to tell us until someone else said they were, so we should assume she just fakes much of the time she sit in that seat? That’s not reassuring!
Bass and Bohn use Eureka as the model for what the County should to do. No other community is following Eureka’s lead. The rest have all moved forward. Eureka’s economy is the worse in Humboldt County with the possible exception of Rio Dell.
Will voters remember this when they ask for a second term?
Will voters remember this when they ask for a second term?
Will anyone come up with the 300G required to win an election against Humboldt’s big land speculator community?
