Editor:

Are you on Medi-Cal? Or know someone on Medi-Cal? In Humboldt County, nearly 40 percent of our county relies on Medi-Cal. Trump’s “Big Bad Bill” slashed healthcare and food stamps, while giving tax breaks to the rich and corporations. On Jan. 1, all of us will feel the force of those cuts on our stretched healthcare resources.

Our governor and our legislature had no solution for this crisis. Healthcare workers did and now we — the voters — do too.

Vote Yes on Prop. 40 — the Billionaire Tax. It’s a one-time 5 percent tax on the accumulated wealth of 250 California residents as of January 2026. Ninety percent of the funds raised go directly to healthcare (preserving Medi-Cal) and 10 percent go to food assistance and public education

Billionaires are spending big to confuse us but it’s simple — Yes on 40, No on 41 & 42.
