The Left makes everything political; divide as much as possible. But In-and-Out burgers? Much of the article (“In-N-Out in the Planning,” Oct. 13) dealt with the Christian owners and their donations to like minded people/organizations. Yeah. OK. So? I guess some in NCJ’s readership needs to know a business owner’s religion and how he or she donates before a purchase but their every day must be hell. Religion, particularity Christianity, is dangerous to the Left. It tempts people with a higher authority. The Left, who mistakenly assume everyone agrees with them, favor the socialist, big brother, government-controls-everything, group think approach.
Differences of opinion are healthy and vital in a free country so what’s behind the Left’s egotistical, “I’m right; you’re wrong … Everyone agrees with me” fantasy? These are the people of tolerance? When I hear of Humboldt State University students of color being scared/threatened by our area, I often wonder by who/what? Are kids getting beaten up? Are police reports being made? Or are their fears taught to them by politically motivated, identity driven activists through our higher education system? The Left’s holy grail, diversity, is limited to a person’s skin color or sex and its activists teach people they’re victims of our horrible, racist, illegitimate, biased country. The Left’s perversion of diversity and our country isolates and divides; it doesn’t unite as it should.
Is describing the owners as a ‘conservative Christian family’ and who they donated to necessary in an article about a new business in town? Why is religion/donations discussed instead of the definition of “animal style?” Or is this another example of the Left’s “tolerance and diversity” by politicizing a Christian owned business/corporation?
In a recent Politico poll, respondents stated that the media, by 64 percent, was most to blame for the division within our country. That’s not good news for fair, unbiased, objective media like the NCJ.
Rick Brennan, Eureka
This article appears in Flash Fiction 2018.

Ricky, Ricky, Ricky. You complain about the opposition supposedly expecting everyone to agree with them…when this entire little screed of yours is nothing but an attack on a straw representation of eveyone who disagrees with you. In fact (at least, when you’re not taking a break to fawn over your king and his court, or to spout the dog-whistle appeals to xenophobia that you favored right before the mid-terms): that describes most of the reams and reams of opinion that you contribute to the NCJ mailbox.
As such: your lack of self-awareness is frankly staggering. (Also: red-baiting went out with baggy neon jackets.)
If not for contentious polarization Mr. Brennan, and his kids, would still be working 12 hours a day in unsafe conditions and there would be no GI Bill, social security, medicare…or weekends!
It’s tough to move our region or nation forward with so many loon holding us back.
Dear Rick, there is a grave misunderstanding here. The proposed boycott had little to do with their being Christian. What motivated that was the fear that they might be the intolerant kind of Christian that sees it fit to use the government to push their religious views on everyone else -namely as concerns gay rights. Now that wasn’t the case fortunately, so the issue died down months ago. But to understand, many conservative Christians have in the past donated to the Republican party because they saw that as their best chance to legally be able to discriminate against LGBTQ wotkers and customers. Shocking right? But, predicated on that being true (which it wasn’t), potential customers decided they did not want their money going to a place that would in turn use it to promote discrimination and intolerance. Thus it is completely consistent of one’s creed to not tolerate intolerance.
That being said, the only real reason to boycott them is simply the reason to boycott all beef right now: it has the worst grain-to-meat efficiency of any animal type, and good agricultural land is getting scarce and leading to deforestation. That, along with the methane constantly produced by cattle, makes beef and burgers the worst food to consume and promote in a climate change ravaged world.
