Editor:
I have and will be running only a positive, upbeat campaign for Eureka City Council. I will focus on my long record of leadership, experience and community involvement.
Unfortunately, my opponent and his inner circle have decided to do the opposite. They have been running negative and untrue letters to the editor filled with silly and false charges.
They claim I am being supported by “the 1-percenters and Big Business.” This is laughable and childish. One dishonest letter even took a statement I made 26 years ago and presented it as something current.
For the record, I have not been involved in partisan politics in over 15 years.
I call upon Austin Allison to denounce his false and negative campaigning and pledge to run a clean campaign from this point forward.
John Fullerton, Eureka
This article appears in The Last Days of the Budget Motel.

“For the record, I have not been involved in partisan politics in over 15 years.”
Well…except for his name appearing as a donor in every republican candidate’s campaign for election in Eureka and Humboldt County. Mr.Fullerton’s letter reads like a seasoned politician…half-truths and serious accusations WITHOUT A SINGLE example….can’t refute that!
Fullerton justifiably lost his seat on the school board after they closed 3 elementary schools. Jefferson school was fully attended. He claims he tried to keep them open, but never explains what actions he took to do so.
Unreported in the media is the deceit Mr. Fullerton’s campaign has already engaged in with his advertised sponsorship of the recent “non-partisan” event at Eureka’s Sequoia Park called a “Block Party” attended by every right wing politician. His opponent, healthcare professional Austin Allison was either not invited to be a sponsor or not allowed to have a booth at this poorly attended event where Fullerton worked the crowd.
It’s a sign of desperation when a candidate tries to blame his opponent for unsubstantiated “inaccuracies” allegedly appearing in letters to the editor.
Marilyn, you are so wrong on so many points I don’t know where to begin.
First, I have not appeared as a donor in every Republican candidate’s campaign why are you lying about that? Yes, I have donated to some Republican candidates but I have also donated to some Democratic candidates and independents as well.
I fought to keep Jefferson & Grant Schools open. I was outvoted on Jefferson by 2-3. Too bad you didn’t feel like helping. The board at that time included three Democrats including two retired teachers, one of whom was a former president of the Eureka Teacher’s Association.
I have been a business sponsor of the Neighborhood Watch Block Party from its very first year. My opponent doesn’t own a business, how can he be a sponsor ? I have sponsored events for other non profit events over many years. My opponent has not. I have been active in Neighborhood Watch since they started in my neighborhood, my opponent has not. Then if you had bothered to come you would have noticed Kim Bergel also attended the Block Party as well as many other Democrats.
Perhaps you should check out the facts before you go public ?
