Editor:

Please join us for a Centro del Pueblo fund raising event on Wednesday, Nov. 4, 7 p.m. at the Minor Theatre. We are collaborating with Shine a Light on Palestine to show the documentary, Traces of Home. We are delighted to share this film with our Latinx community members and supportive neighbors, friends and families.

Traces of Home is a personal quest of a Mexican/Palestinian filmmaker seeking an understanding of her heritage and the pain one carries having been displaced from one’s home.  In her award-winning debut feature film, Colette Ghunim embarks on journeys with her parents to find the ancestral houses they were forced to flee as children in Mexico and Palestine.  Colette’s initial desire to heal her disconnect from her cultures and her parents reveal an internal quest to discover home within herself. May our viewing of Traces of Home help us better understand the plight of all immigrants and their need for care and deserved respect around the world and here in Humboldt.

As you may know, Centro del Pueblo has been active since 2016 organizing immigrant rights support for our Humboldt Latinx. Leading in Humboldt’s Sanctuary Law and Know Your Rights movements, CdP has helped local communities create safer spaces for our Latinx neighbors.  CdP has contributed to our communities in many ways, such as: cultural events, youth leadership programs, substance use prevention, mental health support, gardening, land-based programs, community media, mutual aid and wellness initiatives connected to local families.  Through partnerships with schools, artists, health workers, volunteers and community organizations, CdP continues to build spaces for advocacy, culture, education and community support throughout Humboldt County.
