  1. guess progress can’t be stopped! sad but true. it’s not our fault, it’s just that we also can’t stop bankruptcy and other corporate failures..

  2. Too true, Joel. Walmart will give folks a chance to buy more cheap plastic crap made in China–crap that will need to be replaced three or four times in the life of the equivalent better-made, “more expensive” product. I won’t be shopping at Walmart, but I’m sure many will be lining up to spend money on things they don’t need just because it’s there.

  3. While I agree to the downfalls of WalMart, I think it is important to note that there are already stores in the area that are just as bad when it comes to fueling mass consumption and cheaply made plastic things. If WalMart were not here, those stores would continue to supply those that consume that way. If WalMart was here, it might provide a better quality of discounted items than what are already offered at our stores that we currently have. People in Humboldt have limited incomes and they pay high prices at the stores that are here. I think it would be nice for Humboldt residents to be able to save compared to places like the mall, Target, or KMart.

Like Costco and Safeway have lowered gas prices in Humboldt, and like Kmart, Target and the Bayshore Mall have boosted our economy, etc. All the while, roadside dumping has grown exponentially etc. just as opponents of such infrastrucure have foreshadowed.

Look at other nation’s business models, they require less to support the same, yet have less expendable income to begin with because they don’t allow nationalized corporate takeover.

Support for big box business is rhetoric, and a bold face lie coming from employees within their ranks. The proof is all over the nation, and has been for well over a decade.
