  1. I LOVE LOVE LOVE Entry #7 Ricky Harvey of Arcata (probably NSFW):. Totally original and creative. Even used techno instead of Reggae for video. Besides any man that can wear that green string thing in a public video deserves to win! He has my vote as long as he promises NEVER to wear that thing again…HAHA WTG!!

  2. Maia Werronen gets my vote. She’s just cute and used they used the word lion in place of lying. I love plays on words. <3

  3. I vote for video #1 Maia Werronen. The first video posted is always a tough position. Everyone else gets to see your video, but you don’t get to see theirs. You can tell they made it totally from the heart. They want to go to Reggae! Hook’em up with tickets!

  4. The one video i though stole the show would have to be entry #7 why? Do you even remember the other videos I don’t!! “Brew of Babylon” is instantly an internet classic, look out tosh.O you might have a knew guest.

  5. In the last five minutes, I’ve lost 20 pounds, learned to play the piano, and mastered the art of jiu-jitsu… all as a result of watching “Brew of Babylon”. My vote goes to Ricky Harvey and the gang, for their unmatched creativity, and willingness to bring shame to all of their families. Reggae on the River will be a better place with the “BFC” in the house.

  6. I vote for the 1st video – Maia Werronen! !!!!!

    everyone else should too ๐Ÿ˜€

  7. I vote for entry #1! For jumping the gun and getting their video in first as well as they deserve a great time! Maia just graduated from college and deserves this! And just have to say #7 was very creative and did put a lot of effort into it lol. But slightly creepy lol. If you have a second place they deserve 2nd!

  8. I vote for #1 … Looks like two fun people that would relish in the experience ๐Ÿ™‚

  9. #3 or #10!!!!! they’ve got to win…they need it….I say two tickets to each of them ๐Ÿ˜‰

  10. Maia’s video is the best video I’ve ever seen…of people wearing tiger masks singing a song. She should win!

  11. #7!! Brew of Babylon all the way! Super creative and definitely thought out. Jah lion hot tub adventures!

  12. #3 deserves to win because she has been through a lot with her baby medical wise and is a great mom to 4 and always bring them along to reggae on the river every year but do to medical reasons does not have the money to buy tickets this year so pleas send her to ROTR

  13. Ky-mani Lions’ momma and dad have earned a Raggae Holiday!!! I vote for #3. also #7 ’cause that boi has the moves!

  14. I vote for number 3. I know Ky-Mani’s Mom and she defiantly needs and deserves a Reggae vacation. Since little Ky-Mani’s birth she has been to hell and back spending most of their time at the Oakland Children’s Hospital where Ky-Mani was a patient. Their lives have settled down now and I know that family could use a nice 4 day vacation. Blessed It Be!

  15. #3 – Roar lil lion, Roar. You’ve already been tested too much in your short time. ROAR for your Ma and Pa. Let Jah (through the virtue of the NorthCoastJournal and its’ gracious readers) bless this family with the truest vacation it has ever known…. ROTR at French’s Camp. ROAR

  16. Whats up with all the “dislikes” and negative comments???? That is defiantly not the Reggae spirit.

  17. I commented incorrectly previously…shorttermmemoryloss. My votes are for #3 and #10!!!

  18. These are all fun and I’m sure everyone deserves to win. But I’m voting for 9.1 for originality. The dad is from Kenya & in his country, the young Masaii warriors must kill a lion. But having American kids & loving reggae, he decides to dance with them instead. Very creative! Besides, isn’t this Mateel sponsored event supposed to be “family friendly”? Some of the other videos are sorta… uh un-kid friendly. Yikes!

  19. Not sure if I want to see #7 crew at ROTR…? Isn’t this a family event….? Anyways #3 and #10 won my heart over!

  20. Number 9 is SWEET & Waaaaaaaaaaaaayyyy in the spirit of reggae! Be pround #9…For rockin’ it steady!!!

  21. All I can say is that Reggae is about peace, love and UNITY. No room for negativity, and furthermore Reggae on the river is a Family event and always has been. People have it twisted to be a “college party” event to get wasted and thats not what the true original meaning is. My vote is still for #3 or #10 but I would be happy for any of the family oriented videos with good vibes. Definatley not for a borderline pornographic, innapropriate, non-reggae influenced video. feel free to dislike this comment its all opinion ๐Ÿ™‚

  22. #1 Maia!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  23. Great job to my son Jermaine Jr. Video #10. This is a really good video coming from a VERY SHY 9 year old boy. AND nice job to his 15 year old twin sisters for organizing and creating his video. They really want to go to reggae too, they have not been since they were 11 years old

  24. #9.1 Leishara has finally gained legal guardianship of her grandson. A family pass to Reggae on the River would be a fantastic way for the family to celebrate and show the younguns a little bit of a good life. You can see how much he already loves music.

  25. 9.1. Music makes special memories. These guys should get a family pass to help them create more great family music memories.

  26. #9.1 Sharred family memories make strong families. I hope this family wins the passes so they can create lasting family music memories.

  27. Definitely #3, Ky-Mani lion! Who can resist a cute baby? His momma deserves a much needed break and has been a dedicated reggae music fan forever!

  28. #3 is a happy young rasta! His mom should win the tickets cause he has gotta be the youngest, smiling, beat-keeping groovster with the perfect name too! Jah Rastafari!

  29. i vote #7. this contest is about originality and creativity, a timelimit and the use of a stupid mask. but of course this is humboldt and the journal so that seems to not matter already. reggae on the river has a LOT goin on that has NOTHING to do with family unfortunately and as far as “pornographic” a WARNING to all…at this festival people will be having sex rather loudly and possibly in the open, there will be drugs, college kids as well as adults RAGING, and there will be nudity. last year while volunteering i watched some1 overdose and the last year of reggae rising some1 died. same crowd pretty much. im not saying its not a place for family but i WILL say that people like those of video #7 will be there regardless of what one may hope. if this was a contest strictly about those in need, then that should have been stated by the journal. if ur bothered by the video, talk to the journal, they set up the contest and #7 followed the rules. the baby is cute but the video is 39 sec long, soooooo that would mean that it shouldnt even be in the running but of course this is humboldt…so it goes. #1 is NOT creative OR original. for those lookin for family oriented, these days and esp this year, rotr will probably be the biggest rager of the year which is why i will be there for one day and leaving before the evening turns into an allnight party. its as if most of the people commenting have never been…hmm. i wonder what it would be like if i used the names of jesus or the pope in the same manner as many are here with the name of Jahovia and H.I.M, would it be as funny and entertaining to every1?

  30. #7 gets my vote for being the “most original and creative video of 29 seconds or less” which is what this contest was about….sorry folks, but I’d sadly have to agree with stricktlyroots that Reggae isn’t the family oriented event it used to be…

  31. Just opinion, of course. Some people clearly have very big, blustery opinions… (See thread below.) My vote goes to Maia, video #1! Keep it clean people, keep it clean! Rules state that web support is part of determining factor in deciding a winner. #7 video could have been banned from competing for inappropriatensss from the start, as stated in the rules. and is even described as being probably NSFW, (Not Safe For Work viewing) , therefore inappropriate.

  32. someone please explain how #7 is “inappropriate.” If it featured a woman in a bakini it would have a million views and no one would care. For humboldt county being about “irie vibes” and “everything being about free expression,” everything sure changes when a male is involved. There is no full nudity, and spoiler alert, reggae on the river ALWAYS has naked people both men and women bathing in the river. The contest asked for originality and creativity, although #7 is strange, it best exemplifies the criteria…

  33. I will never be the same after watching Brew of Babylon! I will never be the same if they don’t win!

Off to reprogram my mind from that green string thing…

  34. #7 for sure, most funny and creative. Reading through these comments some people are talking about #7 and they voted for a different video. What does that say?

  35. #7 .. Its obviously the most creative and in all honesty, exemplifies the actual scene at Reggae on the River way more than the other videos. lol. I’ve been going to ROTR since I was 6 and working volunteer since I was 12. Number 7 is clearly the winner. nice work. maniac. ๐Ÿ™‚

  36. Video #1 has my vote. It is honest, straight forward and sweet. They would be a fun couple to hang out with at Reggae on the River!

  37. Maia gotta get to Reggae mon!! Video #1 should win!! She’s got a big heart and a beautiful energy that is going to light up the River!

  38. Hey, here is an end to the “innapropriate” debate. It was found in another case of a man wearing a thong in front of a school while riding a scooter and having on a cape. People tried to get him arrested , but according to police, he was not commiting a crime… and that was in front of a school… this is a case of a video, which isn’t in front of children involving a thong… so would love to hear rebuttals from the “innapropriate” camp… enjoy this link from the Huffington Post. http://m.huffpost.com/us/entry/3341939

  39. We shamelessly used our pug dog in our video! We can clearly see that #7 should be the winner! Very creative & funny! Good job & well done! You deserve to win!!! See you at Reggae on the River #7, I’m going out to buy my tickets now!

  40. As the competition comes to it’s end, I just got to say it has been fun watching all the videos and reading the many many comments that followed.

My votes are for my oldest son Jermaine’s video (#10) produced by his 15 year old twin sisters & my youngest son Ky-Mani’s video (#3) courtesy of his Auntie Krai.

TOP 5 REASONS WE REALLY WANT TO WIN:

    #1 MOM & DAD need some ROTR-R&R
#2 Our twin daughter’s SWEET 16 Birthday wish is to go to ROTR (B-Day 8/14)
#3 If we don’t win tickets this will be the 1st year I did not make it to ROTR
since 1999…….now that would be depressing
#4 Mom+Dad+Daughter+Daughter (our sons still get in free) = TOO MUCH $
    #5 MOM & DAD need some ROTR-R&R!!!!!

Thank-you NCJ & Jah Bless the winner!!!

  41. Entry # 5 was my FAV!!! I loved the original song, the dancing and the dreads as the lionโ€™s mane was so cute!!!!

  42. number 7. NUMBER 7. They showed they were willing to really work for that ticket. Get it!
