The skies over McKinleyville are about to get loud, and not just with gunshots or Friday night football. Rumble Over the Redwoods Airshow takes off Saturday, Aug. 8, and Sunday, Aug. 9, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the California Redwood Coast-Humboldt County Airport ($40, free for children 12 and under with paid adult). Look up for roaring jets, warbirds, skydivers and aerobatics, including the Patriots Jet Team, Red Bull Air Force and Smoke ‘n Thunder Jet Truck. August in Ferndale smells like trampled grass, livestock, hot sugar and the last good stretch of summer. Breathe deep, hold onto your corn dog and have a blast at the 130th annual Humboldt County Fair, running Wednesday, Aug. 12,through Sunday, Aug. 16, noon to 10 p.m. at the Humboldt County Fairgrounds ($15). This year, horse racing’s absent, but the thrills are still charging out of the gate. Take your pick from flying dogs, performing sea lions, carnival rides, youth exhibits, live music, an Outlaw Rodeo, concerts, a seafood Shell-ebration and a Siren’s Tavern dance party.
