“Bon Boniere is currently closed. We will be serving our last ice cream on March 2nd starting at 5 p.m. Come say goodbye. We have enjoyed serving you over the years.”
Thus proclaimeth the answering machine message for Eureka’s Bon Boniere signaling that, after more than 100 years in Humboldt, the scooping will soon cease. Your only/last chance to consume the ice cream shop’s superfluous calories will be during this Saturday’s Arts Alive. Line up, mouths.
The closure comes a mere five months after owner Kellen Moore decided to close their Arcata Plaza location.
Old Town ice cream cravers are not without respite though. We’ll note that Living the Dream Ice Cream just opened a couple weeks back two blocks down the street. Sun(dae)rise, sun(dae)set.
The Journal has a call out to Moore and will update this post when more information is available.

Time for Baskin Robbins/Togo’s Sandwiches to move in! Prime spot, & a great look for a vintage-style sandwich eatery.
I expect the ice cream market is tough at the moment, and impossible with competition. The sad thing is that in a couple years the new Arcata and Eureka shops will probably close (invariably due to inexperience running a business) and for this grand experiment we’ll have permanently lost Bon Boniere.
If I cannot have Bon Boniere, I will have nothing.
At least there’s still Arcata Scoop and Living the Dream in Eureka. I much prefer small ice cream shops like these to Ultimate Yogurt, though it’s pretty good, too.
HSU should reopen its ice cream shop (remember that, up through the mid-1990s?). After a CenterArts Friday night performance, there’s absolutely no charm in grabbing a frozen yogurt squirted from a spigot.
Between new insurance hikes, the economy and a future minimum wage increases for all employees. . they had not much of a choice.
Oh well, they didn’t really build this business anyway. .
This SUUUUUCKS!! And to Meow you are an idiot! Nobody wants a stupid corporate chain in here over a lovely local business that served more than just ice cream (local ice cream at that)…. I am going to miss their salads as much as I am going to miss their ice cream. This really is a bummer! :*( Specially because Eureka loves B.B.
that sucks, sorry to hear that.. not only do i love thier icecream but i was going to hang my art there in March, Do you want me to run the place ? Id gladly do it, I ran my own biz for 6 years, and I currently live just across the street from that location… 🙂 you wouldnt have the overhead and i could probably get that accordian player to finally leave on arts alive…
Boo!! What a shame. Eureka won’t be the same.
Ultimate Yogurt is nasty. The so called yogurt is tasteless and the toppings are so over priced…
So sad. I never saw the business for sale. Can we believe they aren’t trying to sell it? They made their own ice cream for so long. My kids adored both locations. I don’t get why they didn’t try to sell it off….
By the way, I agree with other commenter who said these new trendy spots will be gone soon enough.
This is bullhonkey, where am i gonna get my kona cookie now???? 🙁
Come see my charcoal dry-paintings (portraits of local musicians) and listen to Dale Winget during Bon Boniere’s Last Stand!
We will both be there all evening!
It’s a bummer, to be sure. However, I don’t think the people saying the competing ice cream shops will go under have gone to Scoop. They’re wonderful.
I haven’t had a chance to try Living the Dream yet, but given the closure of B.B., I hope they find a stable and loyal customer base and are here for years to come.
I’m heartbroken. Forget coldstone and baskin robbins, Bon Boniere’s is the best. Incredibly bummed that I won’t be able to enjoy their ice cream and ambiance one last time! Best of luck to the owners, though I wish they would reconsider 🙁
When the Arcata location closed I was afraid the Eureka location would close too. I am deeply saddened by this. Bon Boniere has always been a highlight of family days. They had more than just ice cream and everything was fantastic.
This is so sad!!!! I can’t believe this place is leaving!!!! Best Ice Cream in Humboldt. I always go here. No ice cream dates for me or my bf anymore…
Does anyone remember the Christmas specialty white chocolate with peppermint ice cream? The best!!!
They didn’t make it this year. They will be missed!
Maybe if the Jounal resumed giving away a BB sundae for the best letter of the week, they’d reconsider?
OMG-their hot fudge is the best!! almost like mom’s. BB will be sorely missed. I will try the new spot, but it just can not be the same!
It’s truely sad that they closed. Best ice cream in Humboldt hands down. Some amazing people worked there. Well at least you guys have your first gelato shop there and you’ll get to find out what it is. It’s quite funny how most of Humboldt has no idea what gelato and paninis are. What can you expect in a cultureless hell hole like Humboldt. The rest of the world has had them for hundreds of years and now you guys are like “This is the best thing ON THE PLANET!” Try getting out of Humboldt guys. See the world. I’m so glad that I have moved out of the state and have an amazing paying job.
So sad! So many sweet memories through my 38 years. My favorite flavor as I kid was something lemon-based but I can’t recall the name. Lately I had been digging on their malts. I introduced my partner to their deliciousness after we moved back to the area 3 years ago. I will never forget you, Bon Boniere! You even introduced me to the one of my favorite sandwiches, delectable olive and cream cheese, with toasted almond slivers.
I don’t understand why ultimate yogurt is allowed at the plaza, being a corporate national franchise in a corporate national franchise free zone. I didn’t think it was funny when the Journal promoted them as a fine addition to the plaza, either, when there were already at least three dessert shops owned and operated locally in the immediate vicinity..
We will be getting ice tomorrow
Every time I take a bite of decent ice cream I’m lucky if it takes me back- Straight to the heart, To The Very Best ice cream I’ve ever had= Bon Boniere!!We grew up on that stuff, I’m really looking forward to that time machine!
