The Humboldt T.E.A. Party Patriots — the acronym standing for “taxed enough already” — took to the streets of Eureka again today (
as they did on tax day
), this time protesting President Obama’s proposed health care bill outside Congressman Mike Thompson’s office. (Though Thompson is reportedly in D.C.) The local group is part of a
national movement
to fight what they see as the current administration’s relentless march into the red scourge of socialism.
This article appears in Fixing the World.

I passed the protest group milling around outside (a restaurant?) in Old Town. They were mostly older, nicely dressed folks.
I wonder if they knew just a couple blocks away on the same street there was a throng of people — numbers far greater than found in the tea protest — also milling around… seeking a free meal, or having just received one.
"No universal health care" read one of tea protest signs. I laughed at the absurdity of the sign, then felt sad as I continued driving through Old Town.
Old white people. They represent the past, not the future.
Congressman Thompson used to be a fiscally responsible legislator, and despite being a lifelong Republican I actually voted for the guy because he stood on principle.
Now, he seems to have fallen asleep next to the Obama-pod and become a raving partisan in search of some plumb appointment. Meanwhile, he has the audacity to feature a federal deficit meter on his congressional website … an apparent homage to his recent votes on cap-and-trade and healthcare, both of which will tank our economy.
He deserved this tea party today and I hope the rest of his constituents wake up to his abandonment of Blue Dog credentials.
I don’t think Mike Thompson is worried about your vote, Chris. I happen to know that the constituent calls to his district offices in support of the health care bill outnumber the anti’s about 5-1.
Everything is fine the way it is as long as Chris Crawford has health insurance.
I don’t understand why donating our money to insurance companies is somehow good for the economy. It’s good for Wall Street.
I’m unclear as to where Thompson is on the public option. Does anyone know?
