Unnamed sources have informed the
Journal
that
Times-Standard
City Editor James Faulk will step down from the number two position in the newsroom and return to reporter duty starting Monday, April 19.
The decision reportedly was made by Faulk himself for personal reasons. In moving into the cops-and-courts beat he’ll replace former reporter/”Fat Guy” colleague Chris Durant, who recently departed the daily to launch his own
publishing empire
. Sources say the
T-S
has yet to line up a replacement for the city editor desk.
Times-Standard
Managing Editor Kimberly Wear declined to comment. (Oh, and for disclosure’s sake I should mention that I used to work with Faulk, Wear, Durant, et al. Good people all.)

This article appears in Roads and Redwoods April 2010 (North Coast Journal).

You used to work with them before you were lured away into what now can only be called some kind of sinister, satanic run news room. ‘Dandy’ has been an ancient code word for flesh-eaters in the metro areas of Bilbao for centuries.
Regrets?
All due props to the T-S, but no. The Bilbao flesh is delicious.
(Oh, and for disclosure’s sake I should mention that I used to work with Faulk, Wear, Durant, et al. Good people all.)
And just what makes them "Good People all.)? You saying so?
It’s impressive what the
T-S has managed to cover considering how short staffed they are. But my guess would be that if they didn’t have the funds to hire a new reporter, I doubt they have the funds to hire a new city editor.
Good luck Faulk.
For what it’s worth, a named source, Faulk himself, informed this reporter of the change in his position when I ran into him at the Farmers’ Market, notepad in hand.
It is actually sad how little the T-S is covering considering what smaller papers are doing with smaller staffs these days. Understaffing is the name of the game in newspapers now and most are coping fairly well. That the T-S covers what they do is probably sheer luck. They have like three solid people (two reporters and one photographer) who seem to be carrying the whole paper. What the other staffers do is a mystery. The only place we ever see them is eating lunch in a group or getting coffee in a group.
Take away their Star Staffers and the T-S is pure dreck. Don’t read it, don’t advertise in it, and don’t visit their website. It’s pointless. All the stories you want to read are reposted on news feeds that include more local headlines than the T-S ever will.
I always prefer to drop my ad dollars and clicks on the LOCAL papers like the Journal or the Eye or the Jack and now Savage Henry.
One word describes the T-S:
FAIL.
