It ain’t legal yet, goddammit.
That could well be the subtext of a press release today from the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office, in which they announced the end of week one of the 2010 Campaign Against Marijuana Planting (CAMP) season.
The multi-agency law-enforcement effort yielded more than 33,500 marijuana plants in just four days, according to the release. These were not your small-time, back-to-the-land hippy operations:
Monday teams eradicate[d] 17,500 plants from 12 gardens near Groves Prairie (near Willow Creek).
Tuesday 5,100 plants were eradicated and a loaded AK-47 rifle was recovered at a garden near Friday Ridge Road.
Near Red Cap Road in Hoopa, teams eradicated 8,149 plants Wednesday. Of those plants, 5,000 were found on tribal land.
Finally, Thursday the teams found 2,766 plants from seven gardens near Slate Creek, Orleans.
With the exception of that nab on tribal land, these grows were all on U.S. Forest Service property, according to the release, which ends thusly: “The CAMP effort is expected to continue.”
You’ve been warned.
This article appears in Mega-village.

You have to wonder how many actual criminals, muggers, thieves and such were free to play while our brave police were out there gardening.
Burns, you aren’t Savage Henry. Stop trying to be funny. It totally screws any remaining shred of credibility the Journal hasn’t already stripped away from you. Let SHIT be SHIT and the Journal be the Journal. You aren’t SHIT (at least not yet).
As for the story itself, I’m really wondering how CAMP was able to just drop in on tribal lands to do their thing. Isn’t tribal land technically another country? So that would mean that a CAMP-like team in Montana or Washington (unlikely, but humor me) could just pop on over to Canada and do the same thing? Or a CAMP-like team in Texas go into Mexico to eradicate weed?
Or is the Sovereign Nation of whatever up the river actually allowing these guys to hurt their local economy by destroying someone’s farmed livelihood? If the tribes are already hurting for cash, why in the world would they let some white cops from America come in and strip their “hardworking” citizens of a source of income?
Just a hypothetical question. Of course the reality is much different, but I wonder about such things.
He’s not trying to be funny, he is funny. How does that detract from the post, or undermine credibility?
Double what Joel said! I read Ryan’s post wishing I had done something half as clever when I posted the same press release.
Since the journal can’t go a week without mentioning the stereotype, it’s time to decide…”hippie” or “hippy”?
We let our freak flags fly, word fascist.
I prefer the less politically correct term “grammar nazi” thankyouverymuch…buncha flag freaks…
No sir, this would be a spelling issue, so you would be an orthography enthusiast.
You are incorrect, monsieur, because I only said I prefered the term.
How is this funny? ‘You’ve been warned’? What? To not grow giant fields of weed in the National Forest?
Same story every summer.
I guess the environmental damage and loss of safe public access to public lands no longer deserves mention.
Is it ever going to be legal to grow on Forest Service land? These are not grows carried out by humanitarians striving to supply medical herbs to cancer patients, folks. These are Mexican cartel grows by criminals who don’t care about the environment or the public’s right to hike and hunt and fish on public lands. These are the grows that cause enormous environmental damage, because these people don’t care about Woodsey the owl or Smokey Bear. They care about making lots of money.
