An 80-year-old Eureka woman was killed yesterday morning when she was hit by a pickup truck while crossing F Street.

According to the Eureka Police Department, Maria Bosnar was in the crosswalk on F Street and had the walk signal at about 9:55 a.m. when a pickup truck turning left onto F Street from Harris struck her, causing fatal injuries. EPD isn’t releasing the identity of the 57-year-old driver of the pickup, but said DUI does not appear to be a factor in the collision.

The accident remains under investigation and EPD asks that witnesses call Sgt. Gary Whitmer at 441-4060.

On January 23, 2017 at about 9:55 a.m., officers with the Eureka Police Department responded to F and Harris Streets in Eureka for the report of an injury traffic collision involving a vehicle and pedestrian. The pedestrian was transported by ambulance to the hospital, but ultimately succumbed to her injuries. Next of kin has been notified and the victim has been identified as Maria Bosnar, 80 of Eureka.

The preliminary investigation indicates that a 57 year old male of Eureka was driving a 1987 Toyota pickup east on Harris Street and was stopped at the red light at F Street. Bosnar was at the north east corner of Harris and F Street waiting to cross F Street. The light turned green for the driver and Bosnar had the walk sign to cross. The driver made a left turn onto F Street and collided with the Bosnar in the crosswalk causing fatal injuries.

DUI does not appear to be a factor in the collision. This is an ongoing investigation; any witnesses to this collision are asked to call Sergeant Gary Whitmer at (707) 441-4060.

  1. Record numbers of pedestrian deaths is the cost of having the development industry control every elected and appointed post in Humboldt County.

Not one regulation has been enacted in a generation to ensure that the irresponsible growth surrounding Eureka pays for its infrastructure impacts.

Thousands of Eurekans turned out to protest America’s new president, but they can’t even remove a tiny clique of rural developers reaching deep into the public trough!

    “SAD”

  2. That’s a homicide–vehicular manslaughter, it would seem to me. If you are in the crosswalk crossing with a green light, and the driver of a car kills you, you are a victim of a homicide, as sure as if you were accidentally killed by someone with a gun.

  3. Rod Stewart, let’s not politicize this. Let the authorities investigate and trust that justice will be served for all involved.

There appears to be no direct connection of this incident to your claim of irresponsible “development industry control” of ” every elected and appointed” politician or public servant that may have contributed to the death of Maria Bosnar.

What specific and pertinent evidence do you have to offer?

Please read the police statement. The scene of this incident was reported to be a functioning traffic intersection; a striped crosswalk, a functioning pedestrian light and a functioning traffic light… all working properly. There is at least one eyewitness and there also appears to be store video detailing relevant facts of the incident.

Do you have evidence to the contrary? If so, please present it.

Can you offer some condolences to the family and friends of the victim instead of trying to hijack the incident to support your fabricated purpose and self-serving claim?

May Maria Bosnar rest in peace and may God’s perpetual light shine upon her.

  4. How quaint to read there’s still someone out there believing that development is not political after two bailed out housing bubbles collapsed in one generation and another is on the way!

    Wow.

For many years local newspapers have been reporting that Eureka has some of the highest incidents of injuries and fatalities per capita in California for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists.

Are Eurekans simply more careless than the rest of the state?

Or, has a greedy cabal of large land owners and developers built the area beyond infrastructure capacity….like they do wherever else they can get away with it?
