Days after a McKinleyville man was swept away by a sneaker wave while eeling at the mouth of the Klamath River, his body was recovered on Tuesday.

According to the Yurok Tribe and Del Norte County Sheriff’s Office, Maximo Gordon Edward Macanas was found by a fishing vessel. He had been missing since Saturday.

“We would like to thank all assisting agencies, as well as the family, friends and community members who supported the search efforts during this difficult time,” the Yurok Tribe said in a social media post.

According to a post on the GoFundMe page organized to continue the search after the official one was called off and assist his family, Macanas was located by a local fisherman near Whaler Island.

The post thanks everyone for spreading the word about the search.

“As we begin to prepare for services, we find comfort in knowing that Max is now back with his family. We truly couldn’t have navigated this without your support,” the post states. “For those who wish to continue offering support, our GoFundMe page will remain active. The funds will assist with funeral services and help Hannah and her boys as they begin this next chapter in their lives.”
