This week’s Journal stars the two photogenic whales who recently ventured into the Klamath River. But since cyberspace in unencumbered by space limitations, we thought we’d drop a whale-size load of images we’ve collected over the last couple week’s on ya.
As always, right click/view image to biggify.
This first batch features mama/baby adorableness and the hoopla that surrounded it.
Photos by Andrew Goff except where noted.
This next batch features Sunday’s efforts to drive mama from the river:
This next set comes from Ken Malcomson:
There is no shortage of whale video on YouTube. We think KHUM‘s succinct job tells it best.
This one’s a little longer, but features whales up close going under the bridge.
Okay, one more from furthur down the river.
Oops! How did the now “iconic” RAINBOW WHALES image by Holly Harvey slip in here? Whatev.
This article appears in The China Connection.

Wow, the same photo over and over. Spare us, we’ve seen it all over Facebook for weeks now. Zzzzzz….
This whole Humboldt media world sure is nice to itself.
I love the whales, of course, but I also love the shots of the people lining the bridge and racing to the other side. The $2 parking sign tells a whole chapter of the whale story.
fun collection of pics.
but to remind you: “biggify” and “whatev” are not words. and using them doesn’t make you sound cool.
Hokay, Nancy!
So glad someone’s taking the trouble to correctify your wordification, guys.
Great pics, thanx–er, thanks!
Thanks for the terrific photos. (And for demonstrating a perfect use of a weekly’s affiliated website.)
Is “rainbow whales” a photo, or was it ‘shopped? If the latter… well, I think the real whale photos are magnificent, and while a real rainbow appearing above them would be wonderful, a ‘shopped rainbow added to them is, um, well thanks for the terrific photos.
I’m quite sure that biggify and whatev are words, Ms. White, but “fun collection of pics,” is not a complete sentence (not that this detracts from the meaning).
Here’s a link to the “Makin’ Rainbows: video clip, that shows rainbows coming out of the whales, just 6 days after they came in. Song and “poem” by Brian Tripp. No photoshop involved, just whales, sunshine and water. Miracles do happen!

What do you think the whales are trying to tell us?
Maybe because of so much rain…..the rivers are much deeper and than they have been in a very long time. Tall ships used to come down many of our rivers here in the North…..so many of the rivers have been either diverted to farms or have become so small because of the weather changes……just a thought..
After four visits, several hours and dozens of photos, one of my wild and crazy thoughts is that she’s doing a study on human behavior :). She has definately chosen to (for the most part) remain swimming and feeding in an area where so many of us are congregated. She can certainly see us. Hmmm… So much we don’t know.

A children’s book based on this story about the Mama whale and her calf was recently written and published by my mother-in-law. The story is based on this true story and is a touching story of the love between the two whales and the people who watched the pair dance, swim and roll in the river. Books are $13.85 with tax and can be shipped. If you’re interested, we’d be happy to hear from you. Books can be purchased online, however, additional shipping charges apply. We can ship direct. Please email me if you’re interested. Thank you! What a blessing this story has been to the author and her family and friends!
