UPDATE: National Public Radio, too? Yup. Click [audio-1] here to listen.
Humboldt State University’s recent invitation/call out of late night host Jimmy Kimmel has been picked up by the Associated Press — the media equivalent of “shit just got real.”
We blogged on Monday about the letter sent out by HSU President Rollin Richmond and Associated Student President Ellyn Hender☼. But who the hell are we? The AP’s decision to legitimize this beef means the story now potentially appears before eyeballs surfing … oh, we’ll just list a few of the sites ‘cuz it’s fun and Thursdays are slow at the NCJ:
Washington Post
Kansas City Star (!!!)
OK, that got tedious, but there are oodles more. Non-AP acknowledgement also appeared on the L.A. Times blog.
The Journal adorably reached out to Mr. Kimmel for comment via the un-welcoming main ABC network website contact page. But really, y’all probably will have about as much luck as we will. So! If you’d like to help encourage Mr. Kimmel to make the trek north, click HERE, fill out the form “select a show or category,” (geez) and optimistically click SEND. Even if he doesn’t respond, at this point we can safely assume he’s heard us.
This article appears in Waiting for Chinn.

Oh, snap!
But I’m sure her cutesy little sunburst is just going to be used as another torpedo to sink HSU’s already-listing proverbial ship.
They let her be in charge of something?
And her answer to the school being called a haven for pot-crazed hippies is to sign official letterhead like that?
Good, good. We’re clearly on track here.
Bravo.
I can’t wait to see what happens next.
Jimmy Kimmel is NOT FUNNY! I hope he doesn’t speak at my graduation.
Kimmel is a moronic imbecilic tick of a flea, I already am seriously saddened if this ruins all of those who Graduate at HSU.
Kimmel is an entertainer, but sometimes perception becomes reality. This course, if it exists, is another crack pot attempt to create an intellectual justification over the production of a controlled substance.
HSU students would be better served if their faculty and administrators used better judgement and creating academic rigor within Arcata.
I graduated from HSU in 1983. The university president frequently emails alums about either donating to endowments or pressing my advocacy with the state to avoid budget cuts to the CSU’s. Creating a course like this is both a waste of my money and advocating the university’s poor judgement is not worthy of my political capital or reputation.
Until HSU begins to re-focus it’s mission about being a top flight university with exceptional programs in the natural resources, environmental politics, resource engineering, and the creative arts, it will suffer the indignation of Mr. Kimmel. This same administration also cut the University’s commitment to a top quality Nursing BA program with it’s focus on rural health care and the capability to place trained nurses to the Peace Corps.
Distance yourself President Richmond from the pot head crowd.
I graduated from HSU in 1991 and am also frequently hit up for Alumni donations…they’ve got to be kidding! Cutting the Nursing program and introducing a Marijuana Institute?! I am ashamed of my alma mater. There is no BSN program within a four hour drive now and a rural, impoverished community is left without the nurses needed for its public health programs.
Jimmy Kimmel? Hes way to insulting. Please don’t insult us with an invitation to Jimmy Kimmel. I equate him to the likeness of the pseudoentertainment of ‘Jackass’.
Providing nursing students with the clinical experience they need is going to be a challenge in an area without a major medical center. Yes there may not be a program within a 4 hours drive. But, how many jobs will there be in the area for those graduates and if those graduates move, will the be hired when competing with students who were able to get experience in large hospitals where they are able to see more cases. Maybe there is good reason to cut the program.
Regarding the Marijuana institute. It seems to me that it makes perfect sense in an area that is so dependent on the pot industry, that scholars would study it. Studying the industry’s impact on the community is different than sitting around smoking pot. Additionally, given how the law around pot is changing in so many states, this is a valid area to study if one is interested in questions about the law.
Kimmel you make my chronic butthole itch.
NO KIMMEL!!!
YES CHEECH & CHONG!!!
YES CHEECH & CHONG!!!
YES CHEECH & CHONG!!!
YES CHEECH & CHONG!!!
Haha, wow! Not only did they get rid of the nursing program but also there is no longer a graphic design program. Many people, including myself have moved because Humboldt seriously is all about weed now! So if you have a trust fund and can get away with smoking herb all day then more power to ya! But for the people out there who call it home and try to make a decent living there he place is disintegrating. That is frigging funny he said they were pot smoking hippies, ahem, is there some huge student population that ISN’T like that that I just don’t I is about!? I just find it funny and sad at the same time. This is AFTERALL supposed to be a CSU right? I’m all for studying marijuana that sounds I interesting but Humboldt County, as a whole, needs to wake up and realize the perception that the rest of the world has of it and live up to it or continue letting the demise happen. The poverty, amount of druggies and people on welfare is sad. If marijuana is to be studied then maybe offer that outside of the college this is nuts! Lmao. There is more to life than an herb that gives you a buzz, seriously! And I love bud but please! Why is everyone in denial of the turn for the worst HSU and Humboldt County is taking?
Sorry my iPhone’s autocorrect is messing up my words, sorry about the typos. Bud is great but I think people are making a little bit too big of a deal out of it. Just legalize it completely already and then HSU can study that and all types of pharmaceutical drugs also. I don’t get it. That place is going down and everyone is in denial. Wake up! There is more to life than marijuana! How about a program to reach out to the community more. This sucks to watch I’ve had good times there. I swear just get some damn money flowing into that community from sources other than the students that go to HSU or from pot. How about open up more activities for tourism? Like maybe something people can come there to see and visit like hotels on the beach, a boardwalk, carnival rides, bring in some cash flow Humboldt and get rid of the scummy bums that are just burnt out “hippies” so people can enjoy the beauty there
The graduation project for my Masters is making a 10 gram bud floats in midair on my anti-gravitation machine.
People like Lola, above, would like to ignore pot, though it’s at least one third of our income, and anyone who has travelled can see that similarly-sized rural communities all ’round the nation are in much worse shape. I agree that dropping the nursing program was damaging, and a “multi-disciplinary” program at HSU is laughable. Pot is an economic reality here, and it deserves serious attention.
Jimmy Kimmel is uninteresting, but maybe the older crowd, that enjoys Jay Leno, thinks he’s funny. It’s pathetic to latch onto the likes of him for media attention.
Why don’t you just pick a bum from the street and have Him/Her do the Grad Ceremony, it would be a far better reception than Kimmel.
If you get him, DO NOT CHEER. EVERYBODY MAKE A FLUSHING SOUND AS HE TRIES TO MAKE SOMEONE LAUGH.
Well, this is almost funny, almost clever, but definitely pathetic. Real universities get statesmen, scientists, nobel laureates, etc to speak at graduation. HSU goes for Jimmy Kimmel. Speaks volumes about the decline of the institution since my graduation years ago. I wonder if other alumni are thinking the same thing I am- not one more dollar given to those harassing us by phone and Email to cough up the big bucks for the 100 year anniversary.
I’d really rather not have Kimmel speak at our commencement. What does Richmond think of us, to send us off into the world with a couple of jokes?? Please.
I just used the link NCJ provided to encourage Kimmel not to take the engagement. If you agree with my views, I’d recommend you do the same… it’s our graduation, darn it!
Another point I’d really like to bring up, when I read the letter it looked like Richmond was asking Kimmel to speak for FREE. I wonder if lording the whole “three minutes of material” over him is all just so we don’t have to spend money on a speaker??
I chose HSU because I wanted to opt out of this whole college hierarchy… I thought HSU understood about what things really matter. But this choice of speaker has really disappointed me.
