No surprise — First District Supervisor Jimmy Smith announced today that he’ll be running for reelection this year.
When first elected to serve, I made a commitment to get things done and treat people with respect. We have worked cooperatively with tribes, cities, the county, local organizations and state and federal agencies to achieve success. Our efforts can be measured by the ongoing progress with the Salt River Restoration Project, increased flows in the Eel River, restoration of the South Spit and the first workers compensation coverage project for local fire districts.
The months ahead will be difficult and will require strong partnerships with the cities and communities. especially with the projected state budget deficit and the inevitable cuts to county programs and services. We will need to plan carefully and work to sustain our local economy.
Smith is massively popular down in the First District, but politics are thick this year — will anyone step up to challenge him? My offhand guess is that if anyone does, it will be someone from the HELP/development crew. The General Plan is the biggest issue facing the county in the coming months, and last I check the First District was the only Republican-majority district in the county.
Smith, a Democrat, has been a moderate in land-use issues (as he is in most things). Is that good enough for the HELPsters?

I will vote for Jimmy!
of course you will
I will vote for anyone who has a backbone enough to make a decision and runs against Jimmy. He has consistently demonstrated that he can’t or won’t make a decision in a matter that is controversial.
Anonymous, I invite you to check out the new boat ramp near Cock Robin Island in Pedrazzini park near Loleta.
Jimmy has the ability to listen to his constituents. He returns phone calls and emails and works very hard for the 1st District. He is an excellent supervisor.
Jimmy Smith has done more for this county than any supervisor in many years. He brought millions of dollars into the county for wastewater projects through the 7 county group he chairs. He has a $400,000 project in the works for Fields Landing boat ramp (beginning soon). The volunteer firemen now have a workers comp plan. The TPZ issue is now back in the general plan update process instead of on the fast-track. He was instrumental in the clean up of the South Spit. During flooding he got sandbags and sand for flooded residents and then proceeded to fill sandbags himself. He has had junk vehicles towed and paid for it himself to solve neighbored disputes! He has donned waiders and gotten into water-filled ditches and removed tires and trash and has hauled trashed appliences away that were dumped by the side of the road again at his own expense. When someone calls & leaves a voicemail, he calls back and he acts on their issues and gets results! He’s in his office on weekends and holidays. He respects the people in his district – even the few who have badmouthed him. The list goes on and on and on.
yes, but is he for Arcata growth, Humboldt no growth, medical marajuana, and anti-PALCO. Those are the issues the neo-libs are interested in.
