Nooooo!

To the shock and dismay of tongues county-wide, Hurricane Kate’s announced on Monday that their final wood-fired pizza will come out of the oven Friday, Dec. 23.

The closure comes to us courtesy of that derned ol’ sucking economy. Owners Elizabeth Adams and Matthew Yadley have been pretty openly pursuing potential buyers since summer, but nothing has materialized. They may continue to cater some events in the future.

Boo. Make your somber reservations to color on your final paper tablecloth now.

  1. How disappointing. Kate’s has been my favorite area restaurant since it first opened. What a loss for the community.

  2. Hurricane Kates is a really great restaurant. We always enjoyed it. And who would want to be in that business anyway, with so many demanding, cheap customers like the previous two commenters?

  3. I have eaten there many times over the years. Each time the food and service were beyond my expectations! I will truly miss either having my lunch or dinners there. The staff were always warm and friendly and a pleasure to get to know over the years. But let’s face it for the past years it has been a very finically difficult for many of us in the the Humboldt area. The monies we used to go out and spend for a nice dinner is often now being used for the more necessary things in life. Hopefully with one less restaurant in Eureka the remaining restaurants will each get a slice of the pie and maybe they will find a way to prosper through these difficult months ahead…….

  4. A consistently good restaurant is easy to find in Arcata… check out the new one, The Other Place on K Street. The food and service are amazing. They are only open for dinner. You will not be disappointed.

  5. One of the nice things about Hurricane Kate’s was that, while you could easily blow $100 on dinner, drinks and dessert for two, they still kept some inexpensive items on the menu. You couldn’t get out for $4.50, no, but you could have a nice meal in a nice place for not a huge amount of money.

I’m sad to hear they’re closing.

  6. The Other Place is quite expensive. I’ve heard good things about the food, and also that it’s hit and miss.

I’ve enjoyed Hurricane Kate’s at times, but once I went in there with 3 friends to get a drink. This was during an Arts Alive! Saturday night. Place was relatively full, but there was plenty of room at the bar. We started to seat ourselves, but were told that they just closed. It was 9:02, and we were incredulous that they wouldn’t serve us a drink! They weren’t getting out of there for at least an hour or two… why wouldn’t you make some more money by serving drinks? I couldn’t believe it. That kind of soured me on them.

Instead, we went to Avalon, which was also crowded, where we were given a table, and we stayed until after 11:00. They were so busy, they asked their kitchen staff to stay an extra hour to serve their customers.

When you’re in the restaurant business, you don’t turn people away. Perhaps this was partially the reason for HK’s demise…

  7. I wonder how long it would take the people who complain of high prices to change their minds if they became restaurateurs.

  8. there is absoulutely no consistency in the restuarants up here…..and the service….awful at best……i have cooked and eaten at the best places in the county…….and not one of them does anything special…..especially not for a thirty nine dollar steak….with mashed potatoe no less………surprise any place up here stays open……
