Press release from the Humboldt County Sheriffs Office:

On 02-25-2012, approximately 11:30 a.m. a Humboldt County Sheriffs deputy was dispatched to investigate a Commercial Burglary that occurred at Luzmila’s Restaurant, McKinleyville. When the deputy arrived he met with the owner of the restaurant who told him the suspect(s) had turned off the circuit breakers to the restaurant, and pried open the back door to the restaurant causing damage after scaling a six foot fence. The burglary happened sometime between 11:00 p.m. on 2-24-2012 and 10:00 a.m. 2-25-2012. The restaurant owner reported several cases of alcohol had been stolen, including cases of Wine, Tequila and Triple Sec.
The deputy reviewed a security video tape at the restaurant and saw at approximately 12:15 a.m. a white male suspect is on the back patio of the restaurant moving items around and stacking crates below the camera. The suspect then accessed the camera using the crates to stand on and began smashing the camera. The deputy recognized the suspect from previous contacts as Casey Jay Cooper, 28 years old from McKinleyville. The deputy ran a criminal check on Cooper and learned he was on four separate summary probations for drug and weapons charges, with search clauses.
The deputy drove to Cooper’s residence on Park Road, McKinleville with another deputy and found Cooper hiding under a tarp in the back yard of his residence. The deputies also located several of the cases of stolen alcohol which they recovered.
Cooper was booked into the Humboldt County Correctional Facility on burglary and possession of stolen property charges, along with violation of probation. His bail is set at $50,000.00.

  1. Son, it’s time we had a talk. I know the other kids have cool blogs. I know they fancy themselves citizen journalists. I know you are dazzled at their ability to copy and paste press releases hot off their e-mail accounts without care or concern about reporting standards. I know you look at them and compare yourself to them and feel like you want to be part of their crowd.

What you don’t realize is that they are jealous, dead end losers. They envy your interviewing people. They envy your providing verified news reporting and analysis. They covet the awesome readership you command. They can’t measure up, so they copy and paste to make themselves feel better about their inadequacies.

Echoing government press releases isn’t for you. No one’s day is made better because Joe Criminal committed petty crime and you pasted the press release 60 seconds faster than your blogging friends.

You’re better than this. You’re good enough. You’re smart enough. And doggonit, people like you. Respect yourself and people will respect you.

  2. Yeah, I saw that link on the Journal’s blogwatch. I picked on the Journal rather than the McKinleyville Press because the Press had a catchier press release headline rewrite and ran the supplied photo much bigger. That’s one mug any father should be ashamed to see. Also, the Press’ editor and its freelance reporter are middle-aged while the Journal has some young’uns who could stand to hear their pappy’s sage advice.

  3. Walking behind a horse will lead to stepping in shit.

If you’re gonna be dumb, you’ve gotta be tough.

When choosing between two evils, choose the one you haven’t tried before.

Put on clean underwear every day. Take off your dirty underwear first. Wash in cold water so you don’t set the stains.

One day, you’ll have an intimate encounter with another human. Don’t close your eyes. It’s not the dragon roller coaster at the county fair.

  4. I called Andrew up just the other day. I said, “I’d like to see you if you don’t mind.” Andrew said, “I’d love to Dad, if I could find the time. You see my new job’s a hassle, and the kids have the flu. But it’s sure nice talking to you, Dad. It’s been sure nice talking to you.” And, as I hung up the phone, it occurred to me. He’d grown up just like me. My boy was just like me.

  5. Anyhow, my original comment pertained to the seeming race to blog about HCSO, CalTrans and other news releases… like today, when the NCJ and McKP blogged the Luzmila’s release in quick succession, but it was mysteriously absent from Kym-LoCO, which would normally be all over a release like this one. It would be interesting to see if there is indeed a correlation, that members of the blogger triangle won’t touch a news release if they’ve been beaten to the punch by a significant patch of time, and if so, how much time? Just wondering.
