Plenty of us have spotted the all-seeing Googlemobile rolling through town the last few weeks, stealing the souls of everything in range of its roof-mounted camera orb. And say what you will about Big Brother and privacy and whatnot, I dig Street View. It’s fun being able to virtually wander city streets on six continents. Add a carjacking app and we’ll have a kickass new Grand Theft Auto.

But riddle me this: How can Google’s robot driver roll through almost every square inch of Eureka’s surface streets and miss two long stretches of Fifth Street — known hereabouts as Highway 101?!

Ryan Burns worked for the Journal from 2008 to 2013, covering a diverse mix of North Coast subjects,...

  1. Simpletons look at what’s missing on Fifth Street.

Real journalists ask why elite bankers, the prison industrial complex, parking lot cartels and rich Japanese food interests on Fifth Street between G and J Streets were included in Google Street View.

  2. Excellent point AJ. Other local rags aren’t doing any better. They’re either not trying hard enough or trying too hard to not say the “wrong” thing, is all I can figure.

  3. haha, is that because you think I’m “trolling” you on another “blog”? No sarcasm whatsoever above or anywhere. In fact, use your thinking above and apply to my question elsewhere.

  4. You’ll notice collective and patterned changes in populations’ written dialog on the internet. The humboldt “blogsphere” that I’ve been reading only since june-ish uses quotes as word emphasis frequently, often noting lack of literal translation, or where a reader might be free to substitute any number of synonyms. It’s a habit I’ve picked up. Not so “random”, basically.

  5. Sorry, Random Guy, but AJ’s quotes are useful, while yours are not. If you must emphasize, use italics, but emphasis probably can’t save a sentence like “You’ll notice collective and patterned changes in populations’ written dialog on the internet.”

  6. Ah Joel, if only font selection was enabled. Then I could type in exclusively Wingding on both Heraldo and the Mirror.

  7. Indeed, this isn’t news at all. However, Burns should note that while it’s cool to see ground-level views of “six continents,” as he says, the fact remains that Street View also features ground-level views of Antarctica, therefore making Street View available on all 7 continents.
Joel. you’re not looking at the local news scene clearly, and RG and AJ are right on.
