We’ve been getting a lot of chatter over the transom today, and it all centers around an alleged free showing of the acclaimed documentary
Food, Inc.
next Friday night at the Arcata Community Center. As we walked down to the taco trunk for lunch, news of this event was on everyone’s lips. Could it be, as some suggested, that this so-called free screening would be held in conjunction with the annual
Plan It Green Conference
, scheduled for the Community Center the same weekend? Could the
government
somehow be involved?
One thing’s for sure — whether true or false, the word-of-mouth whisper campaign behind this rumor is shockingly effective.
Unfortunately, the
Journal
could find no one to either confirm or deny. However, a super-secret source did bring in this wadded-up flyer that was purportedly found inside a dumpster somewhere near the 500 block of I Street, Eureka. We present it here; you may draw your own conclusions.

This article appears in Welcome to Pot City!.

If you’re on the PlanItGreen mailing list you got an email confirming the rumor
The plot thickens!
I just have to be a spoiler!…
The flyer says:
Humboldt County Health & Human Services
in Celebration of Public Health Week

Free movie and Discussion
with Barbara Howe, Deputy Director, Public Health Branch

The first rule of Food Inc. is…don’t talk about Food Inc.
Jeez, didn’t you people get the memo?!
SORRY! Maybe Hank can get someone over there at NCJ to delete my posts!
Oh, too late. I just saw it advertised over television on the north coast’s largest big screen television at Bear River Casino. I saw patrons there writing down the date and time of the event. This thing is going to be a massive sell out.
Uh, seriously?
Hurry and delete them Hank, we wouldn’t want the public to find out! People might….attend.
Your back on the pack again, aintja hank!?
Well, if you can’t get a seat at the screening, you can watch FOOD, INC. on KEET-HD on Wednesday, April 21 at 9:00 p.m. and on KEET World on Friday, April 23 at 11:00 a.m.
Don’t you have something better to blog about? This is a lot of hub-bub about nothing. I can confirm that Food, Inc. will be shown (for free) at 6pm on Friday April 2, at the Arcata Community Center. It is being sponsored by Plan It Green, in conjunction with our conference on Local Self-Reliance being held the very next day. Check us out at http://www.humboldtplanitgreen.org. The showing of the film was coordinated and will be hosted by the County’s Health and Human Services Department (because they are trying to get this type of information out to the general public). The reason for the flap was that in the rental agreement that the County signed with the outfit that owns the rights to the film stipulate that they cannot advertise the free showing on television, radio or in the local print media. The announcement was inadvertently released to the media and for that I apologize.
