The tryouts were held a week ago: Eureka’s candidates for mayor and city council were invited to present their bona fides to the EPOA, followed by some Q and A. Today, the group’s president, Patrick Bishop, announced the endorsements:
The Eureka Police Officer’s Association values the commitment these candidates have given to keep public safety their top priority despite the difficult economic times the City is facing. Each of these candidates has publically endorsed Measure O which The Eureka Police Officer’s Association is actively supporting. The nominees that the Eureka Police Officer’s Association has chosen to endorse are Frank Jager for City Mayor, Larry Glass City Council for Ward 1 and Ron Kuhnel City Council for Ward 3.

Personally I think voting for Peter LaVallee who also supports full staffing for EPD would have been a good choice for the Association.
If you vote for Peter, you get to keep Frank in a voting position on the council. This is why I’m voting Peter LaVallee~Mayor.
Mary, if you look at any candidate’s campaign site or literature, they all say that they support the police and full staffing. Its just common sense expectation.
Mary and anyone else thinking about LaVallee, Apparently the Eureka Police Officer’s Association disagrees with you. They have made their choice clear-Frank Jager is the police choice for Mayor.
EPD choice aside, we need an experienced council and mayor. I’m voting for experienced Mayor Peter LaVallee and experienced councilman Jager to stay where he is.
But will ANY of the candidates the growing problem of Humboldt?:
“In June, the California Department of Justice reported that violent crime across the state in 2009 had dropped from the previous year by 6 percent. Humboldt County, however, reported an increase of 17 percent in violent crimes, with assaults rising more than 20 percent and homicides more than doubling, going from three in 2008 to eight in 2009.
Gallegos countered by saying that crime has actually been reduced during his time as district attorney, except last year, and attributed the recent increase to a faltering national economy.
”Since I’ve taken office, Humboldt County has become safer,” he said.”
“Eureka is the county’s retail and social services center, and our already reduced police department must contend with 169 known sex offenders, 553 parolees, 496 supervised probationers and hundreds of unsupervised probationers living in the city, many of whom are drawn to drugs and contributed to the 166 violent and 2,267 property crimes last year, totaling 10 for every 100 Eureka residents.”
Whatever you make of this, it’s an eye-opener for sure about Crime and Crooks in Humboldt and Eureka. The numbers are astounding.
I hope the candidates address this issue rather than ignore it as usual or ptretend it doesn’t exist here in Humboldt.
You guys do realize that the role of mayor is not a very powerful at all right? Apparently you guys would rather ignore that huge detail. The front page article of today’s (10/10) Times Standard proves just that.
The Police officers association does not represent the thought and vote of Police men & Police officers will vote as they wish & no one can dictate their vote for them . In fact i think most Police officers will be kicking LaVallee & Kuhnel off the barstoll and elect secondary candidates as is what happened .
