No freaking joke — the Eureka Inn is going to have a semi-stealth grand opening tomorrow. The Journal just spoke with owner Libo Zhu, who was answering phones at the desk when we called. Zhu said that the company didn’t wish to make a splash because they’re just starting with a few rooms at first. (Zhu also said that the opening is happening tomorrow, not Wednesday, as the link above would indicate.)

This is a historic goddamned day. It’s been almost six years since the grand old Inn, perhaps the second-most historically significant building in Eureka, shuttered its doors amid all kinds of weird financial scandal.

Welcome back, Eureka Inn! Congratulations, Libo Zhu!

UPDATE: On-the-scene report from Richard Stenger of the Humboldt County Convention & Visitors Bureau, who was as shocked as everyone by the news:

The Eureka Inn is going to have a modest reopening of 50 rooms while they renovate and upgrade the other 50. It will be sort of kitschy and retro, but not 100 percent luxurious yet — that is, the rooms are in clean but not luxury shape. But the price will be quite a draw: $64 and up. Priced equivalent to a mid-level hotel it will be a good value, and fun for those wanting a bit of history with their room.

UPDATE 2: The T-S is saying that the first rooms will be let next week, not today. Open for reservations as of now, though!

  1. Yikes! Quick–we need to do something with that crappy old motel katty-corner from the Inn.

  2. I am happy to hear the news about Eureka Inn re-opening. I am offended by the profanity used in this report by Hank Sims.

  3. “Freaking” or “goddamned”? You gotta somehow pay verbal tribute to the sheer OMBWTFBBQ-ness of this story, Laurie!

  4. Why do you have to use such foul language just to make a point. I don’t like your slurs , taking God’s Name
in vain and the like. Poor prose and even worse trying to make a poor point better with such word usage!

  5. Move on, then, son. We reserve the right to curse like we just hit our thumbs with a hammer at any time, and to damn The Almighty for the overbearing self-righteous prick He so plainly is!

  6. and for all of us who care about the inn, we absolutely must support this endeavor in any way possible.

  7. Yahoo! It’s about time! It’s been just…wrong to have it closed all this time.

Now we just need to have him reopen the Rathskellar…! 🙂

  8. YAY!!!! It has been WAY too long…. I have lots of memories…. I’ve been to a lot of events there from Rotary Club meetings when I was in the “Interact” club at EHS, to a Star Trek Convention, to High School reunions. It’s about time the Inn once again becomes a part of the community. I hope that they ressurect the tradition of the “Eureka Inn Christmas Tree this coming holiday season!!!

  9. Great to see someone deserving is caring about the historical value of Eureka Inn and visitors will want a piece of its history and stay there!!

  10. People using foul language do so only because of their limited vocabulary or ignorance.

Or is it the stuff they drink or smoke.

Who knows why, oh yes they are exercising their right, not their manners.

  11. I believe Hank actually has a Masters from Berkeley…so I dont think he be ignorant… maybe he is a verbally premature ejac-blllleeeeeppp–.

  12. Hank Sims writes strong, well articulated prose, and his words sizzle with vim and verve. His use of commonplace vernacular terms such as “freaking” and “goddamned” add an air of informality to the piece without compromising the Journal’s professional standards.

  13. I’ve seen somewhere on NCJ where Hank said the F word or something like that. It seemed offensive and unprofessional – not sure if that is important to him though.

Anyway, let all of the Bay Area affairs begin again at the Eureka INN. The Eureka INN; resting place for cheaters from out of the area.

  14. I agree with the comment about the language…. You can make your comment just as well without sinking to the level of “G-D” or “Fire Truck.” I think using those words just shows ignorance of the English language. (Either that, or he just wants attention through “schock value.)

  15. Anyway, the Sub-Standard (Sorry…. 🙂 article does say that the Inn is having it’s Grand Re-Opening next week, but it is officially opening tomorrow, (Wednesday) with a “Grand PRE-Opening.” It’s on their webpage. http://www.eurekainn.com

  16. I don’t consider the Journal to be a children’s publication. The only thing I found shocking in Hank’s report was the news that the inn is opening, a good sort of shock.

For those who are shocked by language, I’m curious what media you consume. With the number of cable/satellite channels today and the Internet, I think people lead increasingly insular lives, leading to big reality checks when they venture outside their bubble.

  17. All y’all bluenoses are lucky that Dan Savage doesn’t edit the Journal, even though such a thing would be a big win for the county as a whole.

So What Do You Do, Dan Savage?

I mean, daily newspapers all need to put “fuck” in a headline above the fold one day — it’ll solve all their problems. That’s my prescription. And then in one fell swoop they’ll get rid of all those 80-year-old subscribers who won’t let them drop “Blondie.” Catering to the 80-year-olds? Where’s that getting newspapers? Making sure there’s nothing in your paper that’s inappropriate for an eighty-year-old to read?

  18. Hey Hank,
My family is from Nova Scotia and I don’t appreciate that “Bluenoses” crack.

  19. Add me to those who obviously aren’t part of your target readership.

Like Wayne and others above, I’ll heed your advice to “move on” away from here.

I must have missed the class in journalism school where insulting your potential readers was suggested as a circulation strategy.

  20. Look. We’re not for you, you’re not for us, no hard feelings. But if you set out to please everyone you end by pleasing no one — vis the Tri-City Weekly.

  21. Hey man! At least Hank does have some respect, he did capitalize ‘He’.

    Besides, this isn’t a ‘newspaper’, it’s a blog.

  22. People using foul language do so only because of their limited vocabulary or ignorance.

It’s true: I often lament how the prose of Joyce and Salinger suffered from their limited vocabularies. I ponder how much funnier Lenny Bruce and Richard Pryor might have been but for their piteous ignorance. I decry the works of David Mamet and the Coen Brothers, who might yield something valuable if not for their outrageous lack of manners.

    Fools and heathens, all.

  23. Great news. This community has been waiting so long. We really need a social place to meet, have a nice dinner, sit by the fire. Many service clubs are waiting to move their meetings back to the Inn. Once some of these functions are open I hope we all support the Eureka Inn and I wish them great success! Of course, we are all waiting for the 2010 Christmas Tree. Great to keep some of the old traditions too!

  24. Joel, that old motel use to be part of the Eureka Inn and was called the Down Towner. It once was quiet nice, but now it is an eyesore. It will be so nice to be able to go to the Eureka Inn again.

  25. Now maybe the Lazio Tuna operation will reopen. Any chance of that happening? I still don’t know why they have dropped off the map.

  26. I’ve just spent 3 days trying to discover why Lazio’s phone has been disconnected. Have they gone out of business? And can anyone recommend a comparable canned tuna.

  27. I am so excited to see new life for the Eureka Inn — one of my first jobs was as Hostess of the Rib Room back in the day.

I cannot wait to see what’s happening.

    Write on!~

    Lisa Manyon

  28. Its been a few years now but I used to stay there weeks at a time when in town on business. Loved to sit in front of the fireplace. It’s good to see it open again.

  29. Hello, There’s no doubt that your site could be having internet browser compatibility problems. When I look at your web site in Safari, it looks fine however, when opening in IE, it’s
got some overlapping issues. I simply wanted to provide you with
a quick heads up! Aside from that, great site!
