The Eureka Police Department is investigating the death of a pedestrian hit while walking near Broadway and Tomlinson streets last night and asking the drivers of two cars who might have been involved to contact law enforcement.

According to a news release, EPD officers responded to the intersection at around 9:51 p.m. and found the individual lying on the side of the road “unresponsive and with significant injuries.” The person, whose identity has not been released, pending notification of next of kin, was pronounced dead at the scene despite lifesaving attempts.

“A member of EPD’s Major Injury/Fatal Traffic Investigation Team responded to the scene to conduct the investigation,” the release states. “Additionally, an EPD detective and an EPD evidence technician responded to assist with the collecting of statements and evidence. The initial investigation indicates weather (fog) and the pedestrian’s actions (walking across Broadway in dark clothing, outside of a crosswalk) are believed to be contributing factors causing the collision.”

According to EPD, the driver who initially struck the pedestrian stopped and was “fully cooperating with the investigation and there are no indications that drugs or alcohol played a factor in this collision,” but the investigation indicates two other vehicles also “likely” struck the individual “after they were already down on the roadway.”

“These vehicles were not located at the scene,” the release states. “EPD would like to speak to the drivers of these vehicles and ask they contact the department.”

The incident remains under investigation and EPD asks anyone who witnessed the collision to contact officer Jeremy Sollom at (707) 441-4060, ext. 1315, or the EPD Criminal Investigations Unit at (707) 441-4300.
