The county’s COVID-19 information center is sharing a U.S. Department of Justice warning about reports of fake cards purporting to exempt an individual from mask requirements in public spaces.
While there are some exceptions to the mandate — which is the law of the land in California and many other states to help prevent the spread of the potentially deadly virus as cases spike across the nation — there is no validity to the card, according to the DOJ.
In an attempt to appear legitimate, the card lists the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Violation reporting number and warnings about fines and penalties that can be assessed for violating the act, and sometimes includes a DOJ seal.
“Denying access to your business/organization will be also reported to FTBA for further actions,” the card claims in all caps.
The FTBA, according to national news reports, stands for the Freedom to Breathe Agency, a Facebook group which has no affiliation with the federal government, or any official agency.
CNN reports that Facebook page has been shut down.
Masks can help prevent the spread of COVID-19 to others if the wearer is infected, even if they don’t have any symptoms, according to health experts, and CDC has recommended their use since April..

Why does this matter? HIPAA patient privacy laws exempt people from having to disclose why they can’t wear the mask.
Reasons for not being required to wear the mask include Asthma and Claustrophobia.
People are able to state they can’t wear the mask for medical reasons.
