Talk about your all time backfires! We thought we were soooo clever by creating a category that would require Journal readers to choose their least-deadly poison. A good portion of your answers seemed to convey that you thought that asking “What’s the best fast food?” was like asking for “best cancer” or “Name the skinniest fat kid.”
But in the end, good triumphed over cynicism and ya’ll “outlocaled” us. Instead of goin’ McSlummin’, you overruled our snark and declared that your mouths water wettest for the local, grass-fed beef burgers found at Stars Hamburgers.
Though it would be hard to truly lump them in with the rest of these rogues, the Stars crew were bound to win best something. Admittedly, when we were picking categories for this year’s Best Of issue, “Best Hamburger” was vetoed because we all assumed it wouldn’t be competitive — Stars would have killed it. You disagree? Then, question: Have you eaten there?
Anywho, congrats Stars. You are officially the cutest ugly child. Next year maybe we’ll lob you a category you can be proud of winning.

The Breakdown: Star’s 15.1%, Taco Bell 11.1%, “None.” 8.5%, Subway 8.2%, “Why?” 7.2%, Voter Turnout: 21st.
This article appears in Best of Humboldt 2011.

Thumbs down to the people who voted “None” and “Why?”. Friggin’ hipsters.
Noooooooo!!!!!! They are a pitiful excuse for a business. The food makes you feel sick and the employees are SO RUDE. I’ve never entered Stars and come out with a good experience. Not to mention I’ve seen one of the cooks in the kitchen after the store was closed and he was SMOKING A CIGARETTE INSIDE! Disgusting. Horrible choice.
Are you kidding me? You chose the worst fast food restaurant that exists in Humboldt County! The people who work there don’t know how to be nice to people. The food is also way over-priced for the slop you get (that ends up hurting your stomach anyway). If you want a real hamburger that will fill you up with yummy french fries, go to Lost Coast. At least the servers treat you like a decent human being.
P.S. I can’t believe the only other choices were “Taco Bell” and “Subway”. Wow. No wonder Stars won!!!!!!
Of course Stars needs to prove itself every day, but it is statistically significantly GOOD! My mouth is watering right now just thinking about a Stars burger basket….. 🙂
I LOVE Star’s. Whether at Arcata or Eureka, I consistently get good service and GREAT food. Been going there since the ’80s. If you haven’t been before, I recommend you try the Guacamole Bacon Cheeseburger or Chili-Cheese Fries, or for something lighter, they have some great salads, like the chicken curry one. . . Delish! I also try to go there before or after the lunch rush–so they have more time to focus on my order. Sometimes, during lunch rush, it is just PACKED with people and it’s hard to get a table.
