The much hyped Arcata Plaza edition of New Year’s Eve has come and gone. For those keeping score: no Presidents were scaled. No bottles went airborne. Grass still looks good. From the City of Arcata’s standpoint: mission accomplished. But to many others, the New Year’s buzz was killed.

Much in the same way that a show of force by law enforcement was able to snuff out the unofficial annual 4/20 proceedings at Redwood Park, the thick blue line that protected the Plaza’s Mckinley-adorned inner sanctum proved a more-than-adequate deterrent to any reveler that might have wanted to scale the 25th President. Destruction averted.

But the atmosphere certainly less than festive. Around mid-New Year’s Eve day — as was foretold in a press release issued by the City on Thursday — a chest-high mesh fence was erected cordoning off the concrete flower beds that form the Plaza’s center. Another inescapable presence, the APD’s new G.I.-Joe-Mobile-Command-Center-esque Critical Incident Response trailer — a philanthropic donation received earlier this year — was parked next to Bank of America on Eighth Street right off the Plaza to enable onsite arrestee processing.

Law enforcement presence increased, as the night wore on. Adding to a heavy APD presence, officers from — deep breath — Eureka Police, Ferndale Police, Fortuna Police, Humboldt County District Attorney’s Office, Humboldt State University Police and Rio Dell Police — whew — stationed themselves inside the fence and at the corners of the Plaza while also patrolling the perimeter. Woot!

As the midnight hour approached, significantly less people than in years past made their way Plazaward. At around 12 a.m. — depending on the time individual cell phones kept — disjoined shouts of “Happy New Year,” went up from the smatterings of groups on the outskirts of the plaza like separate kernels of popcorn popping.

For a brief moment, an obligatory drum circle — seemingly determined to will some semblance of celebration into the night — formed on the northwest corner of the Plaza. The rhythms, however, lasted a mere few minutes. One drummer was detained and the others were told to move along by law enforcement.

A 2:22 a.m. press release announced that the “Arcata Police Department is pleased to announce a successful New Year’s Eve on the Plaza” and thanked all involved for making this year “safe and enjoyable for the citizens of Arcata.” Six arrests were made during the night: five for public intoxication, one for driving under the influence.

So. That’s that. As reported by the Arcata Eye, a “Plaza Study Group” was formed at a Nov. 30 meeting held in response to the eye-opening Plaza Halloween debacle. That group and those interested in discussing how future holidays are handled are invited to gather Jan. 24 at 8 a.m. at City Hall.

Oh, and happy new year!

  1. Why does the little city of Arcata need such a Incident Command Vehicle the likes of the LAPD. One can only guess what it cost. The Incident Command Vehicle was parked just a few blocks from the police station, go figure.

  2. Q: What do you call the “keep away game” played by the City of Arcata on new Year’s Eve?
    A: Piggy in the middle!
    (duplicate post from LCO)

  3. Im disgusted by what Arcata has become. No African American Green Party Mayors, No real Activism, Total Police State, Paranoid Non-Social Pot growers, and drinking to dubstep every night. What a disappointment. Arcata used to have soul. At least Halloween still goes down!

  4. Well Rudi, you can bet that Halloween will not go “down” next year, judging by the success of this. And I’m fine with that.
Wrestling with percussionists on the Plaza? Not so much…

  5. I left Arcata because of all the dirty, drugged out plazoids, the drug houses and the inability or reluctance by the city to do anything. There is a balance. You can’t have a clean livable city without some controls. I applaud the city and police and hope that this is a path to cleaning up the area. It has nothing to do with Green Party, race activism or anything else (as per Rudi). it has to do with wanting to have a city that you can walk through without stepping on human feces, broken glass or being accosted by drugged-out people and assaulted by skunky pot everywhere on the streets and in the neighborhoods. I like to party but I am responsible, too.

  6. Those interested in discussing how future holidays are handled are invited to gather Jan. 24 at 8 a.m. at City Hall.

  7. I’m with Theresa. I also left Arcata because of exactly what she has described. I used to meet friends for tea on the Plaza and ultimately we couldn’t find a place that felt safe from various ill-mannered individuals. I also applaud the city and police. They are doing their best to keep the majority safe and public spaces lovely for all to enjoy!

  8. Looks like a vast waste of tax payers money. Talk about overkill. It’s one thing to make a statement, but this is ridiculous. Halloween was so bad because there was absolutely no police & way too many high school students who were too young for the bars & no place to go. Left to their own devices the 18-20 crowd also has nothing to do but act out & cause trouble. Some police are understandable and required, but this wasn’t about keeping order, this was about the police making a statement & looking good to the public. But instead it reflects on how scared the local government is of the people who reside in their city. It’s all politics & it’s a waste of money.

  9. Thankyou for this article. In some ways this was a great catalyst for change that we should have been working for already. Jan. 24th 8 am!

  10. I was very sad to see that a person who was advocating art was immediately arrested. Does anyone really believe that the samba drummers were responsible for trashing the plaza? Perhaps we all would prefer the drunks from the bar to litter and vomit all over the plaza? This is a step backward, and I can’t help but feel the fear that many others are feeling at this point. Are all artists to be detained and charged for showing their work to the public from now on? If you don’t think that samba is an art, please find a drummer and ask them how many years they have studied.

  11. I am sorry for saying this but APD behaved like cretins on New Year’s Eve. I had hope that they would be above this kind of thing.

  12. wow. My little brother goes to Humboldt and I just recently had a visit, I can now say thankfully, I do not go there as well. This is an outrage that people can’t be trusted to just enjoy themselves responsibly anywhere. The cops went too far. Trust in your fellow man a little more. Personally if I were out and saw someone throwing beer bottles I’d report it, therefore taking care of the cops need to stay and waist the tax payers money in just the assumption someone is going to throw a beer bottle. Fuck that. I went to Austria two different times on Christmas/New Years and did you know they not only all go out and party in the streets, those crazies throw fire works at anyone and everyone 🙂 Shit was fun over there, why can’t we celebrate like that anymore? Too many people (cops) WORK ON FEAR! Pathetic. We need to take a stand again, join hands and remind everyone that being a decent person isn’t hard. America isn’t as bad as we make it out to be so let’s show the rest of the world that eh????

  13. “I wish more people who actually lived in Arcata would tell us how to run Arcata.”

    Terrence wins.

  14. I wonder how much money we spent paying all of those officers to stand around looking intimidating…? Of course things were not going to get crazy for new years – all of the students are gone. Duh. Good thing the cops put a stop to that drumming though…musical expression and dance are the last things this city needs!! psh

  15. Heh,

Actually if any of you saw what the plaza looked like after Halloween you’d understand… Shameful is one word to describe the results of so called fun. When I look at old photos of the plaza and see McKinley standing there I feel like wow that’s a hundred years ago a piece of history not a Jungle Gym for inbred Yuppy’s children playtime. Go to the toy store and find something to play with. And c’mon Vince dump that hippy already.

  16. Thanks a lot to the jerks on Halloween who ruined it for everyone else. You know there were only a few people. No drum circle. Bulls@#t!

  17. Wow this is horrible! Increase police presence, yes, but don’t take away a public space that we ALL own. So the message is go home or pay money to stand inside somewhere but don’t come to the town center? That’s what it’s for! It’s beautiful to see everyone together out there making music and being happy. It’s great to be able to celebrate in the center of our town under the stars. When I travel I see this all the time. Not just holidays. People go out to public places and hang out together. There can be trouble makers but that’s what cops are for. Go after them! Not the rest of us. The drumming and hence the party should have moved to the city hall lawn if they block off our plaza. There needs to be somewhere for all of us to gather for free just to enjoy. And if we see anyone throw a bottle we make sure they’re caught. That’s not cool! So yes I’ll go to the city hall meeting on Jan. 24th at 8am and try to convince them to give back OUR plaza. Please join me.

  18. “Other police agencies which assisted that night did not bill the City for the mutual aid, and were paid by their respective jurisdictions. “They’re taking care of their own,” he said. Chapman ballparked the other agencies collective costs at about $2,500.”

I call BS on the quote above. So other municipalities are so flush with revenue that they can afford to pay out of their own budget to help the City of Arcata law enforcement.

  19. They shut down the plaza, no loitering whatsoever. The plaza was dead on new year’s eve. Businesses took hits. This isn’t practicing what the city preaches, by announcing a desire to have a peaceful gathering then denying it altogether. Shame on the city.

  20. Here’s some video of Oliver’s arrest:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NLZvgEgsNqo&list=UUn4hlL4yVTw2JE1fb-gUHuQ&feature=player_detailpage

And harassment of the South African drummers:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&list=UUn4hlL4yVTw2JE1fb-gUHuQ&v=qhYUJMhxWJY
That’s right APD and the City of Arcata.
    BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Oh…and Happy New Years you lovely citizens of Humboldt County! Keep up the good work on defending your rights. Like drumming. On the Plaza. For New Years Eve. And getting roughed up by local and not so local cops. And videoing your neighbors and friends getting beat up and being told it is not your right to do so.

I sure do love America. Home of the slaves. Land of the…???

  21. Oh, hell yes… took you so long to show up, Musgrave, I was beginning to worry you weren’t gonna get in on this fascist action, with yer insight and typical suburban white hippie male insight into international slavery.

Yes! Learn us more, wise man. Learn us more.

  22. Well, you know, if you stupid wannabe hippies could act like adults, we wouldn’t have to have the parents make sure you don’t make a mess.

And his thumb is safe this year.

  23. Then there’s the issue of all of these issues having been previously discussed during an issue-heavy Nov. 30 planning sesh at City Hall that likely none of the commenters here bothered to attend. It was heavily publicized in several issues of local publications. But wait, there’s more! You can still help plan the future at the Jan. 24 meeting at City Hall. 8 a.m. Seventh and F streets. Who’s going to talk about their issues?

  24. terrence, I wasn’t aware we had an obligation to remind our APD and city officials to not treat us like we live in a militarized zone during war.

  25. That’s very odd name.

    Oh, you’re apologizing – anonymously.
No need. Just use your name like a big kid.

  26. Jan. 22 2:30 D St Neighborhood Center: Pre-meeting gathering to organize topics of discussion for the actual meeting on Jan 24th 8 am at City Hall. Right after Jesse Jonathon’s community samba class 12-2 $3. Jesse got many of us started in this whole celebration by drumming thing. Everybody’s welcome!

  27. Terrence, I wold have said “go fuck yourself like a mature adult” but I don’t think it’s in you.

  28. I don’t get it. Am I to do the fucking… of… wait, what? What exactly is in me? This is confusing and very dirty sounding.

What were you saying about the militarization of the Arcata Plaza, anon? And the war?

  29. Oh, how I love you Terrance! But not in a hippie way, more like in a way you can better understand…more like a redneck “Deliverance” way.

And I still hope to buy you a beer someday…

Until then, know that I do show up. In fact, I was there video taping…

Where were you at on New Years? Hope you had fun! 😉

  30. I don’t think I can make your date in the woods, Jeff. Thanks for thinking of me.

NYE was wonderful. Working on a plan for next year. Bring the movie machine.

  31. Missed all you militant anti-fascist activists at the Plaza Study Group this morning, as anticipated.

Great group of samba, City, citizens and Arcata residents who addressed previous problems and will create something kickass in coming months.

Musgrave and the Sorry crowd will be welcome to come to the events.

  32. What a welcoming attitude you have, Terrence. Care to share your contribution to the meeting this morning? Bragging rights don’t come as cheap as hipsters like you want to think.

  33. Happy to.

I asked that the residents of Arcata work toward reopening the Plaza and that they refrain from calling one another “fascist” during the process.

I also suggested that a task force be created of well-meaning, like-minded Arcatans for tackling this issue.

But we all gave our name, so you must have done so, too. Why so coy now? What were your suggestions?

  34. Why is name calling only okay when you do it, Terrence? Case in point, this and countless other threads.

  35. That’s some kinda existential question I can’t answer for you, anonymous blog posting person.

I think you meant: “cases in point.” Plural.

So interested in yer idears… which were?

  36. Your grammar and spelling are horrible, Terrence. But why would anybody who gives a shit about this issue give a shit about such things as you just have? I have no inclination of revealing my name on the internet. You, among others, give every indication you’d make an effort to slander me.

  37. boring.

see you not on the other side, perpetual Fieldbrook cyberdooosh.

It was a good meeting and we’ve got it from here.
No need to concern yerself fyyurrrthurrr.

  38. Who is “we”? Who are you speaking for, really? Care to provide their names? Or are you using second rate hipster lingo, with all that “dissing”?

  39. What the freak is wrong with you Terrance? Have we lost you to the police perspective? You have become another stick in the mud of the plaza with your bullshit trolling. Stop fighting with the slobs and say something, anything relevant. Looks like from where I’m sitting, which is very far away, the cops and the city have destroyed one of last cool places. Of course the plaza had taken a downward turn for many years since none of the shop owners or city officials can show any leadership abilities at all concerning the issues. Main Streeters are very close to fascists but lets not call them fascists lest we ruffle those elegant feathers you might have there.

  40. The Plaza has not been “destroyed”. In fact, I walked through it yesterday and it looked just fine. A bunch of drunken malcontents messed it up on Halloween, but it’s still a great green space in the center of our little town. Calm down. Take a few deep breaths and maybe set a spell on oneof the benches there. Today would be a perfect day for it.

  41. Wait a sec. Is it possible Tom, that you are not even in the country? If that is the case, I don’t think you have much of a rational perspective on anything involving Arcata.

    Just sayin’…

  42. Tom – you were missing from last Tuesday’s Plaza Study Group meeting where all the relevant things were said by participants.

Meanwhile, blog posters are spinning tired hippie tales of fascist business owners and the pending police state. It’s frigging boring. Really, really boring.

Not only is that not relevant… it’s lacking anything close to truth.
