A letter to the editor in this morning’s Times-Standard caught the eyes of many around Humboldt County today. Entitled “A quiet anger” and appearing under the byline of Eugene Womack of Myers Flat, it is a pure and somewhat startling blast of teabag rage. The “quiet anger,” according to the letter,

is the fury of the voiceless, the powerless, the ordinary nobodies of America, who are ridiculed, preached to, satirized and insulted, by loudmouths like Jon Stewart, Bill Maher or Keith Olbermann. They are tired of being told they are too stupid to understand the country’s complex problems, too rooted in the past to find solutions and too selfish, to share what they have worked for, with everyone else who wants it.

And a lot more along those lines.

As of this moment, there are 100 comments on the Times-Standard Web site battling it out over the letter. Several people chatted me up about it this morning. I told them, “Well, say what you will but the guy is a damned good writer.”

Twelve hours later, I’m sitting at home and the thought strikes me: Oh. Right.

And yes, in fact. Womack’s letter was actually extracted from an op-ed written by former Wall Street Journal reporter James P. Gannon and published last week in the American Spectator.

  1. Hard to say. "She," Light had her virtually identical letters published in more than 62 publications in 29 states and the District of Columbia, and two foreign publications.

What made it unusual is that "she" changed her residence for every paper – she" claimed residence in Long Beach, CA; Waynesboro, VA; Hunstville, AL; Salinas, CA; Daly City, CA; San Felipe, CA; Santa Cruz, CA; Grass Valley, CA; Gustine, CA; Willits, CA; Vallejo, CA; San Luis Obispo, CA; Myrtle Beach, SC; Greenwich, CT; Bridgeport, CT; Barberville, FL; Gainesville, GA…

    Anyway, good catch, Hank.

  2. At least half of the comments on the TS topix are just people who have nothing better to do than anonymously type petty insults towards each other under the guise of intellectual debate.

  3. That’s the general vibe of the TS topix comments. I don’t pay attention to them anymore, not unless I want a good laugh.

  4. They are tired of being told they are too stupid

Too fucking stupid to write their own whiny-ass rants about how oppressed ignorant white people actually are. Check out Governor McDonnell and you’ll have all the evidence as to why your ignorance. bigotry and outright stupidity are mocked. You deserve every barb, insult and slur directed your way.
