  1. Anyone remember when Taco Hell tried to take the spot in Arcata where the Philly Cheesesteak shop is now? They barely lasted 6 months! Lets give Ass-mart a true Humboldt welcome.

  2. I’m excited. I think the people that want it outweigh the ones that don’t. If you don’t like Walmart, don’t shop there. It will make the lines shorter when I do. Most of the people that read this paper will probably disagree but that’s ok. Shows the type of readership this paper has.

  3. DC clearly failed economics. Maybe it should be mandatory that everyone retake economics every four years before you are aloud to vote.

  4. DC, I hope you have a great time at WalMart. I’m sure the quality of items will be just up your alley. You should probably try to get a job there, because if there are so many people with your mind frame who live here, there won’t be any more jobs left. Jerk. And why insult the readership of the Journal, when you’re reading it too? Have a nice generic meaningless life.

  5. It might as well say “Danger, Bio-hazard Zone” for all I care… I won’t be going there!

  6. Sad times in Humboldt County. I was so proud of the fact that we did not have one for so long. I would encourage DC to read “Wal-Mart: The Bully of Bentonville: How the High Cost of Everyday Low Prices is Hurting America.” I will not set foot in there.

  7. My fellow anti-walmart folks:
As you discuss and debate the relative merits and flaws of Walmart in Humboldt, please direct your insults towards the rapacious corporations, not the locals who need a job or the shoppers trying to stretch a local paycheck without breaking it.

Don’t let the 99% be divided and conquered. Yes, Walmarts bad, mumkay? But so is driving your gas-guzzler to the local non-union boutique coffee house that pays part-timers a walmart worthy wage/benifits package, where you sip imported coffee and soy milk while shopping amazon on your laptop. Can anyone really claim that they buy 100% local products from 100% local stores, spending only money obtained from a locally-owned employer who operates at the highest ethical standards while offering a living wage and full benifits?

If you are truly without “sin,” go ahead, throw stones at walmart employees and shoppers. You really ARE a better person than the rest of us.

Everyone else, please direct your ire at the non-human corporation that threatens us all.

  8. Another store where us poor can afford the prices. Such a bunch of phonies we have running loose in Arcata and SoHum, both places receiving extra income help from outside sources, HSU and pot growing. This situation seems to make the residents of these areas trip all over themselves trying to economically attack the poor majority in Humboldt County. Yes, I said economically attack because most of you reading this rag don’t have the critical money problems that force us to shop wherever the prices for the same products are lowest. You don’t get it because most of you don’t care about the poor, just your politically correct bullshit.

If you don’t like Big Boxes, why don’t you listen to activists like me who have for years told you to create Co-op Big Boxes but that’s too hard while bitching and moaning for years about Walmart is so easily done.

  9. Stephen: Do you think Walmart cares about the poor? If so, you are truly deluded. This is a sad day in Eureka.

  10. My Bear River friend Sparky tells me Walmarts are where NAs go to meet each other. And he’s not talking about rich ndns like the Bowman Hotel gang at Bear River but about those B.R. tribal members living on $4400 a year compared to $80,000 salaries of the Bowman Hotel gang running Bear River into the ground with huge payments going out to the Bowman Hotel and the tribal members outside the Tribal Council getting the lowest per capita of any casino tribe in California that generates Bear River casino’s income.

Poor local NAs are just one segment of the poor population in Humboldt County whose proportion of poor people is one of the highest in California. But again, Progs don’t care. Political Correctness is only what they care about. If Prog activists really cared they would make policies that don’t economically hurt the poor. Bottom line.

  11. Well let’s hope that the majority of bums leave Arcata for Walmart’s super cheap booze and plenty of meth being sold in the wetlands behind the stinking shthole mall.

  12. Wal-Mart will constantly be ripped off by bums, the people working there will get their tires slashed, and cars burglarized, people will sht in the carts, and it’ll all peak when someone firebombs the store. I can’t wait!!!
