Editor:
Lenin famously said that if you repeat a lie often enough, people will eventually believe it.
Goebbels, Hitler’s propaganda chief, also used this tactic — as well as Joe McCarthy during his reign as chairman of the 1950s HUAC hearings. Now we have a new practitioner of lies in our White House (Mailbox, July 30). Maybe this time we are smart enough not to be taken in.

Each time you have ever seen the “approval” polls increase for Trump upon some minor increase in DJI or other stock market or commodities trading prices, indicates that your hope that “maybe this time we are smart . . .” to be based on fallacious premises.
From near 40% to 50%, as evidenced by polls, are NOT.
Instead at least this percentage are motivated entirely by personal greed, not caring that the Constitution has been “tremendously” violated by this man and his minions. As the “good chermans” proved 80-90 years ago, it takes less than a majority to turn an entire nation to autocracy and the evils of fascism.
We may be over the line to that fate already, in spite of Pollyanna-like whistling in the graveyard.
