Editor:
What could have possibly been the intent of Joel Mielke’s “cartoon” in your May 5 issue? Humor? I’ve seen legal notices with more humor. Biting social or political commentary? An obvious lack of talent rules that out.
Then what was the Journal‘s motivation for slamming the good citizens of Fortuna by printing the “cartoon”? Because we do not fit your ideal as a bastion of bleeding-heart liberalism? (I note Arcata was not mentioned.) Shame on you and Mielke. Perhaps you should revisit your recent history of revolving reporters, editors, owners, etc. It has not improved the quality of your publication. My solace is that you have such little influence in our area that it will not be damaging to anyone but you.

Sirs,
as a 10 year resident of Fortuna, and member of the Fortuna Pistol Club, I take offense at your cartoon. Your cartoon depicting a Fortunan shooting a gun in the air with a beer in his hand, could not more off base. We have always assumed, that the elites of Arcata view us with predjudice. More than once I have had my pick up truck spit on (on the NRA sticker of course) while visiting Arcata. So, the caricature of us is not a surprise. You Elitist people of Arcata, who preach tolerance, acceptance and a New World Order view prove your ignorance and intolerance once again. Maybe you should look to our low crime statistics, clean city, wonderful residents and sense of community and see that gun ownership is the key. If you practiced what you preach, your City could be almost as good to live in as Fortuna.
I don’t know about Fortuna, but people made mention of gun shots in Eureka the night bin Laden’s death was announced. If this occurred in Fortuna as well, then the cartoon is valid.
If “people made mention of gun shots in Eureka” then it MUST be true….I live in Eureka and heard NO gun shots the night of OSB’s death….
If Brian didn’t hear gunshots “then it MUST” not have happened.
I knew you would understand……
Still waiting for the companion cartoon of HSU students holding a prayer vigil for OBL’s demise…
